I too am surprised at Istonel figuring it out but at the same time it makes sense. Same goes for why he stopped Wyatt from sharing his story. Istonell uses his experience to understand species as a xenobiologist so figuring out his suit was messed with in a "harmless" way and the hatred Wyatt has for the Drazzan is simpler to narrow down. As far as stopping Wyatts story, knowing how he feels after seeing the horror the Drazzan are capable of he probably deduced that Wyatts experience was probably worse and/or more personal so he wanted to spare Wyatt from reliving it as he didn't want to relive his experience

This is why she feels so close to Wyatt....... because they are so similar. Wyatt, naturally brilliant tactician who can analyze the battle field and come up with solutions. When an idea hits him you hear his thoughts and his eyes move back and forth while processing the info. Clara is the same only her battlefield is political.........remember how her hands fidget and Wyatt noticed before it seems like she was talking to herself? Her experience that gave her the REAPER name as well as her view on how nobles should be and Wyatt being a commoner on the recieving end of unworthy nobles make them of like mind so it's not as difficult for her to calculate what Wyatts view might be

It could have gone either way how Istonel handled it. I was surprised he took ai as a valued lesson in lieu of striking back as if insulted. There’s hope for Instonel yet in my eyes. Cudos Ekhidna for the handling of this character development. A true friendship has been born of common experience. I love the way this story is developing!!

2025-02-24 06:56:29 +0000 UTCMore thoughts. Clara, Redmond and the Prince all seem to want a return to the original values of the Principality as laid out by the original Julian Astor. Those values were that the Nobles would make decisions that would be the best for ALL the people. Over time these values have shifted as generations of selfish, greedy and self serving nobles have interpreted them to suit themselves, shoving the Commoners out of the way in the Process and devaluing them (filthy commoners etc) into almost another species. This allows the Nobles to cr*p all over the Commoners without guilt and without damaging their own self esteem (bad Nobles bring out the Mr Worlo in me 😆😆), but I digress. Wyatt is the absolute embodiment of Julian Astors - and Clara's and her small set's value system. Wyatt is strong, brave, capable, but also humble, unassuming and protective of the innocents. I think Clara is deliberately taking full advantage of Wyatt's virtues by building him up to become a Role Model to the Nobility of what they are supposed to be like and to contrast his selfless nature, his concern for life and fairness with their warped, entirely self centred beliefs.

Was the duel about House Oakmoon being a House of bastard children? I could see Wyatt and Declan becoming friends especially if he sees similarities between Declan and his brothers. Really want to know the Composters reaction to Declan.

Now Declan Oakmoon and his servants have pledged loyalty to him. it makes me wonder why Rachel needs to talk Wyatt in private. Leopold, Noltar and Gregor had private moments with Wyatt. Rachel is the only Composter who has yet to speak to Wyatt alone. I assume it something simple like apologizing to him. This is something she wanted to do early on. But the Composters indicated that wasn’t necessary with Wyatt. Or could it be something else?

It may not even be six months since his ennoblement but now he's a knight, a wing commander, a royal mediator, a bronze ace, a (very effective) Marine-equivalent who is combat proven, a royal confidant so trusted he has a dormant commission, and has earned the genuine respect of even former enemies, including a now former lone wolf. Then Declan comes along...

Since saving the reaper he keeps getting things he not use to shove on to him. I hope Ekhidna takes it as sign of his great writing but I pray for wyett. The poor man. I'm happy the experience open Istenal's eyes...or nose. Seems he got a good shock and change of perspective.

First let me say, please take the time you need with all our well wishes, and thank you Ekhidna for ensuring there was enough preparation to facilitate the loyalty of your fans. This chapter is right on queue illustrating the role Clara embodies as a noble of The Principality and ruling family over noble houses. She stepped up to the duty of restoring order of the Ferenties House and recovering control over Haego from invaders and rebellion. She mediated talks to weigh the arguments of all parties to restore the peace and Principality rule over Haego, cleverly drawing on unique resource of newly ennobled Wyatt to establish unbiased perspective in this discussion. Istanel was recently introduced to understanding and new respect for Wyatt Staples. The rebel general knew Wyatt had recently been ennobled, even challenged Wyatt to declare why anything he stated could be trusted. Wyatt had listened to the talks, and reflected on the motives of both parties to understand what barriers kept them from agreeing. Using his experience and curt reply, Wyatt declared neither had offered a viable solution, but he recalled a story similar that helped understand why they were invalid choices. He indirectly shared how the solution must come from within the commoners acceptance to return to Principality rule but resisted outsiders directing their lives and would require Haego would need to create nobles trusted to restore the rule and law. Istanel rejected this on basis what was required to justify becoming a nobel exceeded current capacity of Haego and the rebellion. Clara, a masterful tactician, task master, and politician had positioned all the players now and proposed they accept the compromise Wyatt had suggested of ennobling the commoners that demonstrated they were worthy by earning the status by restoring Haego to order while being aided by House Ferenties to create a new minor house under Ferenties and lesser houses of commoners that earned elevation to nobility on Haego. She appeared to be unwilling to accommodate the Haego demand for a mediator between Ferenties and Haego during the transition back to order, but then appointed Wyatt to task as if he would be her voice in the issues that might arrise. Thus Wyatt is bridled to his new noble responsibilities in serving her and her plans, only to discover his returning to Noirnavio was awaited by those seeking to swear fealty to him, former enemies from boarding Gallant Venture. The events snowballing into his dreaded fear of being a noble, Wyatt must now aid in restoring order to govern a world, and is followed by those he had no desire to lead. A beautiful chapter of diplomacy and duty illustrated for our enjoyment. I suspect Clara has staked out Wyatt as a goat to draw Casimir's father into combat. She implies she cannot loiter about this system, but suspect this is a half truth to deceive where she will be, allowing her to use stealth remaining nearby for when Casimir's father arrives to vindicate his son's honor. Wyatt will get some practical experience while also keeping the Haego space out of neutrality to allow her to battle Casimir's father. Repurposing the Drazzan ships will augment system defenses, and confuse all enemies that arrive in system giving her surprise to attack with. Wyatt feels the burden ever growing on his shoulders of being a noble, and worse the source comes down through the plans and actions of his friend the Second Princess. The job role grows ever greater and he struggles to rise to the responsibility. I hope he soon realizes he is positioned in the perfect place to affect change across The Principality by demonstrating how Nobles must lead the commoners to affect greater prosperity and foster loyalty rewards not earned through current practices. I suspect the lesser nobels swearing fialty to Wyatt will be called upon to support his noble oversite Thanks again for a great chapter.

2025-02-23 16:14:04 +0000 UTCJust a thought on the last scene with Declan Oakmoon. Delcan and his commoner servants were waiting in front of Wyatt's quarters. It means they are free to roam the ship. Only way I would think that would be allowed is Declan joined the crew of Clara's fleet.

I expected as much from Oakmoon, but lol Wyatt's reaction was perfect. He really can't catch a break from being placed on a pedestal by all of the decent nobles.
