The Public Square for January 2025
Added 2025-01-15 17:00:11 +0000 UTCAttention Citizens: I’ve decided to start a little newsletter!
On the 15th of every month, I’ll be sending a newsletter to everybody on Patreon at the $1 tier level or above. Every quarter, I’ll be making the same newsletter available for free on both Patreon and the Mailing List, starting today, with…this!
I’ve thought about doing a newsletter for a long time, but in 2025, it’s finally happening.
I’m doing this for 2 big reasons.
The first is that I’m increasingly pessimistic when it comes to all forms of social media. I’m off of Facebook, I’m off of Instagram, I’m off of TikTok, I’m off of Reddit, and now, I’m off of Twitter. Rather than force myself back onto of these platforms for crass promotional reasons, (yuck,) I thought that going forward, it might be better to directly control the means of communication with the audience. That way, I wouldn’t be holding my nose and holding myself back every time I posted on one of the many Bad Websites. Viola, newsletter.
My second reason for doing this is that Patreon is making some business-sided changes this year. Over the course of 2025, they’re forcing all creators who get paid for every new creation (like me!) to switch over to getting paid every month.
To be perfectly clear, I’m not happy about this change. One of the reasons I signed up for Patreon in the first place was that they allowed for this more casual model where you only charge people when you have something new to show them. Doing things the other way makes it feel way more like a j-o-b. That sucks. But they’re forcing everybody to switch over to a monthly model, and so I will be making that change later this year.
One of the problems with a monthly model is that it incentivizes people to churn out high-volume/low-effort art on a monthly or even weekly basis. I hate that. It’s anti-creative if you ask me. YouTube incentivizes the same thing, every incentive structure pushes you towards putting out more and more mid-tier videos. In fact, this is a problem everywhere. Anything run by an algorithm has the unintended side effect of producing a large volume of mediocrity. In my opinion.
So, Patreon is going to force me to switch to a monthly subscription model, but I’m stubborn so that’s not going to stop me from working at my own pace and posting whenever I damn well please. Because to do anything else would be anti-creative. But taking into account my ever-increasing rejection of most forms a social media, I thought that it might be a good opportunity to have some more interaction with the audience on a monthly basis.
It’s important to me that nothing distracts from the main project, which is putting out high-quality educational videos. Or, if not high-quality, at least high-effort. So, in my opinion, low-effort videos would be a distraction and a waste of time. But a low-effort newsletter? That’s not a distraction, that’s easy, so that’s what I’ll be doing going forward.
Progress Update:
For the last couple of weeks I’ve mostly been working on Video #89, which is kind of a sequel to the “Work.” video that I posted in September 2023. When I finished that video I had a lot of left over research that I never ended up using, so for the last couple of weeks I’ve been trying to flesh that out into its own video. I think I have enough to proceed, but I’m not sure… I may need to read one more book… so I’m leaving it at 80% Research on the ol’ website for now.
For the rest of January I’ll be leaving Video #89 and moving back to Video #88, which is a big, bloated, ever-expanding mess. Every time I touch the script for this video it seems to get substantcially longer, which is good in the sense that I clearly have a lot to say, but bad in the sense of…I put a bunch of work into it and it’s no closer to being finished. So the job for the next couple of weeks is to try to nail down the structure with a beginning, middle, and end, so that the script stops growing.
I’ll probably have more to say about Video #88 next month.

Books I’ve Recently Enjoyed:
The City in History, by Lewis Mumford
I’ve been spending a lot of time going through this book and making detailed notes, it’s going to be important for Video #89. Mumford wrote this in 1961, he’s Mad About Cities and Mad About Capitalism in a way that’s pretty refreshing and interesting. And obviously these two things have only gotten better since 1961. Solved, actually. I’ll probably end up going back to this book a lot whenever I write up that sequel to the Work video.
Watchmen, by Alan Moore
I re-read Watchmen in the New Year and, surprise surprise, it’s actually excellent? I looked up when I had last read it, and to my complete horror it was 15 years ago, and I hadn’t much thought about it since. One of the interesting things about revisiting it after 15 years is realizing that the whole damn thing is about aging, and about the world kind of passing you by and spinning out of your control. I definitely didn’t clock that the first time I read it. This time, I could very clearly feel Moore rudely calling the readers a bunch of Dan Dreibergs.
Films I’ve Recently Enjoyed:
The Wizard of Oz
Over the holidays I had been going back and re-reading some Joseph Campbell for fun, bits of The Hero With a Thousand Faces. This got me in the mood for The Wizard of Oz, which is kind of the perfect example of Campbell’s hero’s journey in every way. Campbell famously inspired Lucas when he wrote Star Wars, but I think that Oz maps even more cleanly onto his formula than Star Wars does. Fun.
Albums I’ve Recently Enjoyed:
Station to Station, by David Bowie
For some reason I’ve been listening to Station to Station on repeat, which is Bowie’s most (???) drug-fuelled album from 1976. I think I remember reading that he was so far gone that he became hyper-fixated on the colour white. Would only eat white food. Would only take white drugs. Created the Thin White Duke persona for the album. Also like… occult stuff. He was totally gone. Golden Years has been on repeat for most of January, which Bowie wrote for Elvis like a year before his death, but Elvis turned him down. I always assumed that it was because it’s kind of a dark song, but if the songwriter was a halucinating drug addict it probably didn’t help. And speaking of which, TVC15 is a mostly nonsense song about watching TV while on drugs, and somehow it’s an absolute banger.

Comments
Check out ko-fi; they take a lower percentage than Patreon and YouTube. Also (if you're getting into comics as a narrative medium), read the Department of Truth. Very underrated graphic novel. Super freaky art, but it works. Deadly Class if you were an 80s kid, or had Gen X parents. Batman's White Knight series is a really good deconstruction of both Batman and Bruce Wayne. Punk Rock Jesus has no right to exist as it does, yet we're all the better for it. The Garth Ennis Punisher Max run is one of my all-time favorite runs in comics ever, bar-none (it's also the reason I don't believe punisher can ever really be adapted right without it turning into a horror movie). Transmetropolitan is based around the concept "What if Hunter S. Thompson lived 300 years from now, was even more erratic, and had an itchier trigger finger?" Just a few recommendations from me. Some are better than others, but tried to avoid too many mainstream series. They're very much reliant on your preexisting knowledge.

2025-01-28 02:36:33 +0000 UTCUncritical support for you. I currently support you at the per video level but will happily remain when it switches to monthly. Quality is worth waiting for, none of us want garbage. You are fully correct about what this incentivizes.

2025-01-20 13:11:59 +0000 UTCI think you’ll find a passionate and active community here! Epic History TV certainly has quite an active bunch that help with stuff such as Chinese pronunciations

2025-01-17 14:27:17 +0000 UTCThank you for your brilliant videos. I'm going to cancel patreon bc of the new pay model, and will look to support you when your next video drops. Keep going!

2025-01-16 16:04:22 +0000 UTCI've loved your work for years my friend, and I hate that Patreon is forcing creators to move away from per-creation billing. Totally agree it skews the incentives to high-volume/low-effort slop. If you hook up with another platform in addition to Patreon that supports that per-creation billing, I'm sure I'm not the only one that would be very happy to support you there. Looking forward to future newsletters!

2025-01-16 12:20:06 +0000 UTCI didn't read all the comments because I'm lazy and I'm also working...but it you don't put a video out that month can you still suspend payments for that month? I've seen other creators do this. Edit: Not that you don't deserve it. I love history and you are literally the only channel they did a well done comprehensive series about the Congress of Vienna. I love your content. Having said that... quality is more important than quantity. I'll gladly pay for monthly payments to support your work but understand not feeling right about it. If you know a video won't be ready....maybe do like "history matters" and just say "no one is being charged this month". Sure he's not the only one but hey, loophole is a loophole. I'll up my tier amount if it happens like this. You do great work.

2025-01-16 10:55:56 +0000 UTCI also like the pay per video model more.

2025-01-16 00:37:09 +0000 UTCI like the newsletter idea and appreciate the explanation of changes. Agree that most social media sucks, but I'm a big fan of federated platforms. Have you considered Mastodon?

2025-01-15 22:52:43 +0000 UTCThat Mumford text was one of the first course materials I read in my undergrad, and I instantly loved it. Great bit of work, especially viewed through the lens of when he was writing

2025-01-15 22:30:42 +0000 UTCConsider setting up a gumroad or subscribestar as alternatives. I hate patreon and would prefer to support you on almost any other platform.

2025-01-15 21:55:55 +0000 UTCI remember some years ago CGP Grey doing a video about the “capricious algorithmic gods” and recommended a way for all creators to stay close to fans of their work and avoid shenanigans is to have a mailing list. So I’m excited to see Santa got my letter and we have a Historia Civilis mailing list!
Pluto
2025-01-15 21:52:47 +0000 UTCJust to note that it isn't changing yet, but will do this year. I tust Historia Civilis will give us plenty of warning to adjust (or cancel) our pledges

2025-01-15 20:23:21 +0000 UTC2 videos in progress? Awesome! I’m so excited for that long one, and the work video is one of my favorites so I’m really excited for the new one :), I’m glad you’re not letting them changing the payment effect how you produce art, it’s a lot better that you’re sticking to your ways. Lots of love!

2025-01-15 19:57:34 +0000 UTCYes, you will have to pay what you're subbed to monthly This is the change that Patreon is forcing on creator to make more money for the company typical us business practice, shady and dishonest I will still support this guy though, not his fault

2025-01-15 18:43:32 +0000 UTCThanks for the update! I'm a long-time fan and have shared your vid on work many times so it's great to hear there's a sequel coming. I highly recommend also checking out the vids and book, Bullshit Jobs by David Graeber. Regarding monthly Patreon subs, I don't mind in your case. I've been historically bad at liking and funding my favorite content creators but have started doing so as a New Year's resolution... so I feel I have some catching up to do with amazing creators like you and Bobby Fingers. I also don't get the sense that your fan base would push you into changing your pace of quality over quantity. As for social media, Bluesky is the new place for creatives... until it becomes popular enough to be enshittified like the rest. I also agree with what you said about algo's promoting shorts. To say more would quickly grow into a very long and complex discussion. Anyway, I fully empathize and support the solid (and higher) ground you've found to stand on to do your great work. Thanks again!

2025-01-15 18:16:11 +0000 UTCHappy to hear you've finally made the cut with twitter. I found it really disheartening how many people felt they couldn't let go of it immediately when Musk bought it, but here we are. I'll continue supporting you on a monthly basis, and getting some kind of progress updates is nice, even if they're just to vent about the frustrations you've encountered. It lets us know you're still alive.

2025-01-15 18:11:23 +0000 UTCHonestly I love learning about the process of informative content creation. I have a whole new level of appreciation for the final product when I can see how much effort and dedication went into it. Excited for the new topics as well, they offer new lessons and teach a lot about diplomacy, lord knows we need that right now;(

2025-01-15 17:18:04 +0000 UTCHow does this work? Am I being forced to pay my $3 every month or still just whenever a new video is out?

2025-01-15 17:16:34 +0000 UTCSomething I'm wondering now that you kinda highlight your process a bit, is how many books do you read (roughly) when you're doing research on a video? Do you read them more than once?

I hope we'll return to Rome at some point, I'd love to see your take of Augustus and the Julio-Claudians. Happy New Year!

2025-01-15 17:09:53 +0000 UTCLove this and fully support your stance on high effort content. Honestly was considering subscribing to the higher tiers and figuring out a way to contact you to say I just want to give you more money, and don't actually want a mug! So the monthly thing is no concern to me at least. Loved "Work" and am very excited to see more!
