looks like you could wait afrer all lol

So, with the title and the theme, and the effects that kicks off France's attitudes and policies over the famine, how did this END for the various states involved? I LOVE the comprehensive look at these decades, but does it all tie back into the "years without summer"? That seems to drop off as Metternich and then Canning get in the game and start their time at the helm. Is it a running undertone for the entire period?

Glenn Boswell

Agreed. Gaining the benefit of the greatest navy in the world to defend out interests at no cost is a good deal. Both sides had interests that aligned. Good times. :)

Brill

Great great job! I can’t wait for the next video 🥰

Matteo Bruni C

Oh I did not expect the patreon video to be hosted on Vimeo, I would have expected a link to the YouTube one

Jérôme-Rico Öhlmann

So late this but love the new content

Devin

Amazing ep! So glad you’re avoiding that political nonsense now and are instead focusing on uhh *checks notes* political instability in 19th century Europe.

RM-L

I think HC’s point on the Monroe doctrine was that it was Canning who considered it to not help the americans so much. Certainly if we consider the monroe doctrine in the latter 19thC and beyond then i’d agree with you, but it was not so clear at the time that US would have the ability to enforce it. Remember this was only 10 years after British troops burnt down the white house!

RM-L

WEEEEEEEEEE!

Tai Ni Pu Na Ni

they didn't really. the crimean war involved almost all the great powers and was comparable to some of the napoleonic wars in its casualties.

Zee

As an American I thought the American jokes were funny, although I do think the take that the United States didn't benefit at all from the Monroe Doctrine is rather naïve. Every reason brought up on how the British benefitted from the agreement goes for the US as well, I'd say arguably more so in our favor; we were able to gain the world's largest navy as an ally in our own developing sphere-of-influence effectively negating the possibility of having to deal with European powers ourselves, allowing the US a free hand to develop into a Great Power as it historically did so without any major conflicts with other Great Powers. The Monroe Doctrine remained the de jure justification for American imperialism and growth throughout not just the second half of the 19th century, but entirety of the 20th century as well.

Ethan Ludwig

It's some wonder they managed to keep things from boiling over too much until 1914

Svennie

I really enjoy the series of 19th century videos! The Congress of Vienna was a fascinating starting point, I hope you will continu

Mo

Thanks! As I am Deaf, I rely on captions. Can you please have captions enabled or added? Thanks

Pheephilo

The Spanish fought the French tooth and nail during Napoleons occupation only for them in hindsight to be like “those revolutionary reforms were kind of nice” . Great informative video as usual.

James Rella

“American Noises”

Peter Vincent

Excellent, Canning as a real one

Tom

Great job

Always your comrade,

Love this series. Might just be me, but I feel like it has a stronger narrative arc than the post-Caesar Roman series. The videos in that one were superb but I always felt a little less attached, though the end of Cicero’s story was worth completing for sure.

Oliver Payne

I think it's clear at this point that Tzar Alexander wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed. Let me rephrase that: thick as pig shit.

Rard

Is this...a joke? I can't tell if this is a joke or not. I think it's supposed to be a joke? Jokes aside, I wonder if the narrative of the Monroe Doctrine being "a diplomatic coup for the British" perhaps allows the United States to shed blame for its role in the atrocities that occurred in South and Central America (the banana republics, Gran Colombia, etc.) It seems to me that this was foreshadowed (39:26 or whereabouts), so I am looking forward to a future video that goes deeper into 19th century American imperialism. Thank you, Historia Civilis, and, uh, God bless America I guess. Hot dog is (a lot less ironically than I'm willing to admit) my favorite meat, though; I feel very attacked.

Kilo Juliett

Spanish Republicans calling their king a hoser is now my headcannon.

Faris Natour

my god americans are such fucking morons

Morgan

I wasn't sure why HC was making a big deal about a seemingly inconsequential part of American history but i guess this is why

Falco

Yeah, like, America clearly did well off of it, but the tone and length of his reply is hilariously revealing.

Breaker

This is yet another amazing video. Your 19th century series has become my favourite since the first congress of vienna video

Harry

This wasn’t about winter at all! Haha, glad though

Iñaki Rosa de la Fuente

It's worth reading about in more detail. Very tragic 😥

Rather Old Hat

Oh no! $12 a year

Dan Hanc

What's even your point? This is edu-tainment, nobody cares. If you think you're fighting the good fight with this argument, I'm sorry to inform you, watching and engaging content doesn't achieve anything. It's just hella fun, and you're ruining the fun

jeralm

This is definitively one of my favorite video of yours. Extremely well done!

Jack Stone

Why waste everyone's time talking about a quote that aged like milk 200 years ago unless you genuinely believe it? Historia told us to leave because he knew it was bs but wanted to dunk on america. It was a big reach to even include america in that video at all lmao whatever

Craig Allen

Hey man, I think your response is the exact reason why he asked us to leave for that bit of the video.

Vasilios the Wise

Cringe

Ty

same

Rutas

As usual, fun and insightful. IMHO Canning's doctrine probably was the driving force behind the civilization of Hong Kong from 1840.

Patrick Siu

How some people fail to see this guy telling a very funny joke yet making sense at the same time beats me.

Patrick Siu

You guys are just being liberal fanboys until someone proves me wrong

Craig Allen

Someone describe how I'm wrong as opposed to just calling names tho? Historia Civilis missed on this point is all. I'll welcome all counterarguments but the monroe doctrine led to america being the strongest empire the world has ever known

Craig Allen

give him a break he just drank a gallon of bone hurting juice

Bartłomiej

This is incredibly cringeworthy, and I'm American too.

Octavian

This, ladies and gentlemen, is what butthurt looks like.

"tHe aMeRiCaNs GoT nOtHiNg" except a free hand to conquer to the pacific coast as a fledgling, baby nation. 100 years after the monroe doctrine america starts taking over the world to replace incompetent europe permanently. 150 years later and our currency is ubiquitous globally and we control all world trade. you can thank the monroe doctrine for giving us the time we needed. and it wasn't much time that we needed, was it? love the channel but your liberalism can be over the top. nationalism is a natural feeling and state of mind for patriots of *relevant* countries. I wouldn't expect citizens a vassal, like canada, to understand that feeling lol. Looking forward to your next upload I guess, but I think I'll cut you off from my $1 a month since you wanna take shots like that at your overlords and protectors to the south. That American dollar probably goes pretty far in Canada lmfao

Craig Allen

amazing video

PoopdeckPan

I gasped so loud when I learned about Castlereagh's suicide

Mihály Vádorgráfett

I love your shift from Roman history to 19th century Europe. I’m interested in both but this fascinating stuff.

Game Caesar

This Canning dude was a lot smarter than he looked

Alaa Jabre

Absolutely fantastic!

Brandon

"And we will discuss all of that in the next video" YES YES YESSSSSS

Villejag Fleskopelikane

This has gotta be one my favorite videos so far. I love all the different perspectives and analysis. Super interesting series!

Sam Neyts

Mitt Romney who let the dogs out! I've been quoting that for years!

Morrissey the Vegan Bore

Oh boy. Yes yes yes

Brent Martin

Phenomenal as always, HC

Rwfssqsfc

My favorite meat is hot dog!

A Large Adult

Fun fact about Canning, before Liz Truss he was the shortest serving Prime Minister, and also the only one who only served during one year. Others also served less than a year, but just happened to be across 2 separate years every other time.

Thomas Gymer

I can’t explain how blue my balls were for that 99% for like the last 3 days

Lavar Ball

I think it’s the first time you’ve ever brought up the US in your history videos. Some jimmies are going to be rustled 😂 We’re getting closer to the springtime of the people’s too. This is gonna be interesting

Tom (Gallalad)

Damn it. I banged out half a bottle of Macallan 15 in the last two hours and I JUST mainlined my heroin. Actually, I guess that means I'll be able to enjoy this video for the first time twice. It all worked out! The only history channel that could keep me from nodding off on half a bottle of whisky and three packets of dope. Could there be a greater compliment?

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

excellent video :)

Imadeomelettes

26:04 I was expecting any other word than that.

Sam Aronow

Thank you dearly beloved. Always a pleasure to experience your work and wonderful expression of self that peaks out in your videos 😊

John Willhite

Never thought I'd see "letsgoooo" in a HC video. So funny

Adam Washington

Heck yeah, new Historia Civilis always makes my day. Thanks for the great content as always, I'm looking forward to seeing this series continue!

Wesley Nooter

Eeeeee!!!!

Peter A

i love hot dogs

Anyone else live for moments like this? 🤍

"Winter is coming, and when the Long Night falls, only the Night's Watch will stand between the realm and the darkness that sweeps from the North."

Puggernauts

This drives me crazy and it should be an easy fix: you've got an erroneous line running through Anglesey in Wales that makes it look like two islands instead of one.

Sam Aronow

im so happy this popped up today. LFG

Kiran Singh

It’s 3am in the UK but fuck it I’ll stay up and watch it

Joshua Deykin

Understandable policy - I'm actually on the Patreon app, which opened Firefox automatically when I tried to play the video. Ah well, technology has never been particularly good to me. Thanks for the reply!

Alejandro Rodriguez

I’m shitting and pissing myself I’m so excited you uploaded

I tried the link in a couple of browsers, but each one gives me the error: "Sorry. Because of its privacy settings, this video cannot be played here." Does anyone know why this might be or a workaround for it?

Alejandro Rodriguez

19th century history is so underrated. Maybe you could talk about the proto-cold war Great Game between the UK and Russia?

James tuck

It’s a good night!

Thank the lord the drought is over
