We do work too much in our society. The problem is us. We accept the rules of our job because we indebt ourselves. Medieval people didn't have so much stuff to buy and pay for, nor could they borrow money. We have electricity service, garbage services, internet, water, car payments, mortgages, phones, tablets, clothing trends, insurance, Netflix, digital media, the new whatever, et cetera, et cetera. Whatever we spend all our time on. That's what labor is, time. You can never get back, but It needs to be produced and paid for, and exchanging your time in the form of money is how it's done. If we dumped all that extra crap, we could collectively tell our employers where to stick it, and we'd have way more free time. Nope, we need stuff. Bob has one, so I need one too. Spend money! Consume, consume! Ohh shiney! Consume, consume! It's also getting to where you get less for your time. We do live longer than ever. We can save and retire and have a notion of daily comfort never known in the world before. So, we do have more time to spend in general. I'm not saying it's perfect, but it's pretty good overall. We do need to be careful not to let the control freaks and government rule our lives. It's getting worse every day.

Great Video. Saw it on HasanAbi's Stream and rewatched it on your YT immediately. Had to support you.

https://reddit.com/r/badhistory/s/37YRNGZEwh Here’s a rather comprehensive criticism of this video from bad history in case you haven’t seen it. It focuses primarily on the sources you used here and I think they did a rather good job. It seems your sources were either vastly out of date, poorly represented in your video, or not even quality sources themselves (the opinion piece by woodcock in this case). I really do think it points out some massive problems with some your claims here (in particular how long you claim hunter gathers and medieval peasants worked). It’s definitely worth looking at

Thank you for a great video!

I love your videos and the amount of meticulous detail you research for each and every one of them. Though I'm in fundamental agreement with you here, it made me a little uneasy to see so many quotes from George Woodcock. Please don't let this be a sign that your content will become increasingly political in nature. That whole domain is just so unfathomably complex and full of sanctimony. Your videos have always been so cozy and I hope they will continue to be. In any case, great job as always.

Been reading Henry George’s “Progress and Poverty” and I think it vibes quite alot with this subject

+1 to what @Igor said about sources! Have long been a fan and joined your patreon after this vid!

This video and particular the ending card background made me finally jump to supporting you financially. One feedback: maybe try and link to source-pages on specific statements where possible, I found that a very reasonable critic fredda raised in a recent video on Krauts approach to history, and especially if you do politically charged content like this (which I think is *good* to do!) it strengthens the work a lot to make it "easily checkable" vs. having to read the the complete source

It is literally a religious attachment, called the Protestant Work Ethic. Encyclopedia Britannica "Protestant ethic, in sociological theory, the value attached to hard work, thrift, and efficiency in one’s worldly calling, which, especially in the Calvinist view, were deemed signs of an individual’s election, or eternal salvation." Europe may have birthed it, but America was founded on it.

I've watched your stuff on youtube but this convinced me to join your patreon. This is great stuff and I'm sending it to more-or-less everyone I know, please don't hesitate to do more deep-dives on things outside your classical wheelhouse.

Woo hoo!

Eric

It's more just different. Not bad, just different.

Love this coming out during the current wave of strikes and unionization. Bread and Roses, friends.

BLB

I didn't find it off-putting at all.

Chris Erickson

I found it off-putting

It’s interesting to see how different nations view work. The US has an almost religious attachment to work seeing it as your worth in society. I feel like other countries do a better job separating your value as a human from your work.

This explains why I'm blocked on Twitter.

Great! I was telling my friends about this video the whole month! ☺️♥️ Wonderful work! Awesome video!

While I'm sure the tone against capitalists will be inflammatory to many, I also think it will serve as a wakeup call to many others. Life exists to be enjoyed if not every day almost every single day, and work will more often than not be a direct detriment to your enjoyment of it.

QM

Its crazy how much more explictly damning you are in this video compared to others.
