ROME, ANTONY & CLEOPATRA, LOTS OF SHENANIGANS.

...I was somehow able to squeeze boats into this one too.  I don't know how.

True story: the other day, my soul left my body as I watched as my cat walk across my keyboard and cancel a 14-hour export.  It's technically 100% her fault that this video wasn't posted yesterday.  I've asked her if she'd like to formally apologize to the viewers, but so far I'm just getting blank stares in response.  I'll keep trying.

I love that you are covering post napoleonic Europe it is not covered often and I hope you are gonna talk about the Crimean war and the unification of Germany

7and2make10

I'd really like a Sulla video too. Explain where Caesar came from and why he was almost inevitable after Sulla and the political climate

Ciello

am I the only one who gets ‘video does not exist’?

s10w10rr1s

You should rlly go back and do a Sulla and Marius series, bc it rlly shows how far the political violence in Rome had gone, but also the level of political corruption.

Connor McPherson

To think we will one day have a complete history of Rome in these videos!

weedoo .

I think he should do octivian till he becomes emperor, then do Sculla I think the fact that sculla isn't mentioned leaves out context

Luke Farley

tbh I'd love to hear about Sulla, or Spartacus next

SamuraiSob

Absolutely beautiful! Can not wait to hear what comes next from Augustus and his incredible life

Brady Smith

It seems like something that should have been a Monty Python skit. "Pull! Pull!" Antony: "Ow! Owww! I'm not dead! Please stop!" "Almost there, my love!" "My small intestine just fell out..." "Don't worry, just a little further now!" Antony looks to camera: "IT'S..." MONTY PYTHON'S FLYING CIRCUS!

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

true

Michael Rück

I really hope this isn't the end of the Caesar/Octavian series.

kraven

Great Video!

Attila Damirchi

Yooo that was fire af

Connor McPherson

I don't think Romans parading other Romans in triumphs was a very acceptable thing to do to the Roman public. I doubt Octavian ever planned anything like that.

Mod

I had to disable my antitracker plugins.

MediocreDude

Great video! Do we know if HC is going to return to the 1800s stuff soon?

Oliver Payne

Works on my computer, not phone

Anirudh

Did you reupload? The link doesn't work

Anirudh

Going more into the Empire would be cool, but honestly, I'm curious as to the other historical eras we haven't seen yet that Historia wants to cover more. I like the Rome and Caesar stuff, but his Congress of Vienna and Trial of Charles I stuff is also really good. Can't wait to see what comes next.

Marty

I actually do believe Octavian would cry upon learning Marc Anthony had died. Not bc he genuinely loved him or whatever, but bc Marc Anthony died before Octavian could parade him in his triumph. That or Octavian would have preferred to kill him or let his subordinates kill him rather than waiting for him to die.

Marty

It was hillariously cute watching Octavian admiring Egypt's roads

larry82

I would agree that regular content would be great, but one thing to keep in mind is that the quality of HC and Oversimplified videos have vastly improved over the years and so understandably it will take a bit longer than it used to, especially since I think they're both one-man operations.

Jordan

Link doesn’t work

Connor Foley

I can't stop rewatching keep up the quality!

Norwalk

Started uncontrollably laughing when Eros went out Too good

Nixonites Anonymous

Ahhh thank you

K Legend M

Interesting parallel between Octavian wept at Antony's death after being presented with his sword vs. Caesar wept at Pompey's death after being presented with his ring. Both of which happened in Alexandria...

Alex Feinstein

I loved to find out that HC is Orange pilled!

BooBooBlueBerry

Great video as always man, it is really a pleasure to watch your content. I have one question. After Antony and Cleopatra’s deaths, what did Octavian do with their bodies? Do you have any theories about the location(s) of their graves?

Emirhan Dulan

truly an all-around Antony way of going out

Josh Rohloff

Is this the end of your sequential Rome content? Or are we gonna keep going into the Empire?

Breaker

It says the video does not exist for me

TechnicalTombKing

Amazing as always HC! You've been my favourite YouTube channel for a few years now, and you're only getting better! Regarding your comment on Octavian's conquest of Egypt - was Augustus named after it, or was it only the month of August? You may notice I have a personal interest in the answer to this question :)

Augustus Mackenzie

Excellent video as always. I am only a bit melancholic because in the past we would get more regular content. Don't get me wrong: I loved and still love this channel, but I don't want it to turn into something like the "oversimplifed" channel: posting only 2 videos per year. I suspect that after 60 or so videos of ancient rome, historia civilis is kind of anxious to do something new. Even though many fans (including myself) have an insatiable appetite for our beloved little roman squares, the creators interests and motivation should be the first priority. This point in history feels like the last page of a massive chapter and would be a fitting end to the "roman civil war(s)" series. If HC is indeed a bit tired of this time period I would gladly see it end here if this means we can get back to a monthly schedule of HC videos.

Michael Rück

Quality content, this is why I joined your Patreon :)

Jonathan Granirer

"Octavian Wept" doesn't quite have the same ring as "Jesus Wept" lol

aspjr2013

Amazing work, wonderful video. Thank you Historia!

Isaac Lavine

15:32 I shouted "OMG YESSSSSSSSSS" out loud when I got to this part!

Faris Natour

Based and orange-pilled

jeralm

all i can say is that caesar would have pulled cleopatra's plan...

plifal

For those having issues watching the video, I was having issues trying to watch it on your phone on the patreon app, i had to open it in my browser and it worked just fine

Vincent Lamontagne

HC videos flex so much nuts.

Charles Wood

Smart man thanks for the help

Scott Walker

What a mess. I'm conflicted between feeling bad for Pink and Blue, and to resigning them to their own fates. Antony dug his own grave because of, well, bad brain dumb dumb stupid. And Cleopatra for falling for the guy. I'll miss them all the same, those damned squares. Amazing work, HC.

Jemolk Ervich

thanks!

cam

For anyone else having the same issue, it appears to be a bug with the app. Was able to get the video to load in a browser.

Grayson Hayter

It says the video is unavailable? Anybody else having that issue or is it just me?

Grayson Hayter

video unavailable??

Beck Mcnulty

"Curtain call" is a lovely way to put it and that's more what I was meaning I think

Tom

How's the report going ?

Lucas

Certainly the curtain call of the late republic, but one could also argue that the Roman Republic had died long before the 2nd and even 1st triumvirates.

Andrew Wenger

15:40 Historia Civilis rebranding as a civil planning youtuber confirmed???

Andrew Wenger

It might not work if you’re using the app. I launched it on my mobile web browser and it played.

Walker Kinsler

It might not work if you’re using the app. I launched it on my mobile web browser and it played.

Walker Kinsler

For some reason it says the video is unavailable?

Mav

as in, she was the last of that cadre of characters from that period of history, Caesar, Pompet etc. Everone in the Roman story after Cleopatra really was either a julio-claudian goon or a child of Empire.

Tom

I always look at the death of Cleopatra as the real death of republican Rome

Tom

i almost fell out of my chair at 15:40

Lukas

cats's name Cleopatra , isn'it ?

bel0919

This...this won't be the end of your Roman history videos, right? You'll continue the narrative? Because MY cat is adamant that you do so. I love that you watched your cat walk across the keyboard, rather than doing something about the possibility of her causing mayhem. Because that's what all of us cat servants do: we watch them walk across our keyboards in terrified suspense, occasionally querying them as to their reasoning and/or indifference to our sanity, but ultimately just allowing it regardless because OH YOU'RE SO CUTE DO WHATEVER YOU WANT!

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

Very good once again. I love all your videos, keep it up!

Ryan Brown

It says the video doesn’t exist 😭

Jacob

We were robbed of the funniest moment in history when Cleopatra successfully hauled Antony up with the rope.

Jimbo Squiggs

Me 😭

Glory to Humanity!

The ordeal between Cleopatra and Antony was like a better version of Romeo and Juliette, a doomed love story where trust isn't always so easily given.

Norwalk

Anyone else getting “this video does not exist”? 🥲

Scott Walker

That was basically the story of the rest of his life lol

Ashiq Ali

I laughed. I cried. I learned. Thank you so much for the amazing content. There's so much stuff out there being pumped out just for views, but your videos are speical. We can feel the love you put it and appreciate every video. Stay true homie. 👍 💯 🔥

Jonathan C

Whoesever side you are on (if any) when learning about the roman civil war, you can't deny, Cleopatra was a remarkable woman

Liam Pender

My live has changed so much since these vids started. Not bc of them. well maybe a little bit. anyway, thanks.

Smallbusinessman

needed this

Kasey Farnum

Crazy to be here after such a long series, Roman civil wars over.

Ben B

Dear lord that was incredibly dramatic and sad! I’m surprised Antony didn’t spilt in half when being hoisted up given his luck.

Ryan

I cannot wait for the 40 consecutive videos named "His year: Augustus"

Lad’s Tour

Thanks!

Ryan

The line about urbanism lmaooo

TheGreatRambler

lmao the dig at American cities was perfect

Jonathan Conrad

Historia Civilis - thank you very much! I have been following these Caesar-Octavian series for 6 years now! Please tell me what are your plans? Are you planning to continue this timeline or is this the final chapter of the Roman republic series?

Marat Vardanyan

I know! I actively avoid reading or watching other stuff on this time period to avoid spoilers lol. It's great storytelling!

Nadav Sagir

Another amazing video! left me in chills! I love how you go so in depth with the details to paint a complete picture of the events, and how transparent you are about the reliability of sources in different parts of the story. Keep up the great work!

Nadav Sagir

I do my best not to read anything about this on wikipedia just so i can experience the fall of the republic like a work of fiction. Thanks for the show!

Alicja

I do wonder, since you love boats so much, if you've read Robert K Massie's 'Dreadnought'. It's the book that got me to take history in a light of actually being about people (and boats) rather than just boring facts to learn by rote. Thanks for all your hard work!

frostedflakes

The cussing at the end took me out

Adam Washington

FWIW, the Hellenistic Age Podcast covers several episodes about the Indo-Greek kings and even touches on Cleopatra’s escape plan. TL;DR : it wouldn’t have worked. The state of the kingdoms were much worse by that point than Romans and Greeks would have known.

Douglas McLean

Worth the wait as always! Thank you for taking us on this journey

Rwfssqsfc

What’s the name of the very somber music used throughout the video?

Chandler Morrison

Got to say I love those Agrippa zoomie animations

Andrew Orr

It has been quite a ride from the mythical founding of the city all the way through the republic and to this climax. The extreme detail you put into every step never ceases to impress and makes historical figures from millennia past seem relatable characters that could've lived today. Thanks for everything, HC.

Rard

obviously ur cat was violently against the downfall of Egypt.

ap

HC makes me cream every time he posts

Kendall Michael Byrd

This video feels like the end of something huge. Half a decade has gone by since Caesar’s crossing of the rubicon video. It makes me a tad emotional thinking about the squares we won’t ever see again. Pink, red, blue, orange, and the most important square of all: green.

Chandler Morrison

Cleopatra was blue.

Jan Štefanišin

I REALLY want an alt-history where Cleopatra's plan works and she escapes to India

Joshua Evans-Lowell

Nevermind got it working, just need to open it outside app

Lucas Beltran

Says the video doesn’t exist

Lucas Beltran

Wow, what a way to finish off the Roman Republic era. Onto the Empire!

Gabe Flota

Been waiting for that ska music for so long, what an episode! Thank you bro ❤️

Josh Woodford

Fantastic video. Question - if Cleopatra had a poisoned hairpin, why didn't she use it on herself instead of the dagger when she was surprised by the Roman negotiator? Was she just trying to create the appearance of being willing to die, and it actually took her time in captivity to make that decision? Or did she actually use the hairpin at that point instead of a dagger, and her apparent sickness was actually because of the poison?

Eddie Hock

Great video, as always! Thank you for trying to get an apology, I'm deeply offended by her transgressions but will accept her apology when it comes.

ultrabeep

I can't get the video to work. Is anyone else having issues

Joshua Johnson

Hey, the cat technically made you a favour by acknowledging your work that it allowed you to do in its house.

Casian Florin Danila

Yeah that worked, thank you

Harry Jackson

Love the Not Just Bikes reference!

Oliver

If you're still having problems, try watching it directly from the Patreon webpage.

Historia Civilis

Oh, that's definitely it. The video is connected to your Patreon account (to prevent people posting it to forums and whatnot.)

Historia Civilis

That didn’t work either, it could be a mobile format issue, I’ll try logging into Patreon on my PC when I get home from work, see if that lets me watch it.

Tyler Jones

Well, they certainly slithered into a nest of vipers.

Robert Jarman

Roger, tried it, still no dice. Gonna try the good ole “turn it off and on again” trick.

Tyler Jones

Try refreshing everything. I can see on my end that people are watching it.

Historia Civilis

Finally!

Itamar Klartag

It’s giving me a “sorry this video doesn’t exist” message. Probably user error, anyone else having issues?

Tyler Jones

Saids video doesn’t exist, anyone else having this problem?

Harry Jackson

Corrrr here we go then

Josh Woodford

LETS GOOOOOO Antony & Cleopatra are over party 🦀 maybe your cat is simply a loyal Antonian? Thanks for the hard work, HC! Feels like the end of an era, saying goodbye to Antony.

Zachary Clawson

Time to eat the good food

Walker Kinsler

Your work is greatly appreciated my friend

Jonathon

how dare the cat.
