The Congress of Vienna (Part 2) (1814 to 1815)

It's the THRILLING CONCLUSION to the Congress of Vienna!

Our heroes come out of this one looking quite bad!  A lot of lying!  A lot of incompetence!
What else is new!  But somehow, miraculously, they stumble out of there avoiding another world war.

A lot of Poland-Russia stuff in this video which...as time went on...started to have...increasing resonance....  Not intentional, but I definitely noticed.

ANYWAYS,

Enjoy!

Great video, but would it really have been more realistic and more effective for Castlereagh to have asked the representatives to immediately jump forward to the outlawing and emancipation of slavery altogether? Britain had to pay an eye-watering sum to emancipate slaves across the empire in 1833, and I think the delegates would have just laughed at Castlereagh if he'd asked them to commit themselves to do something that they probably wouldn't have been able to afford to do at the time. I think Castlereagh just knew that the Spanish, Portuguese and French representatives were never going to be impressed with the British public trying to insert the issue of slavery into this peace conference, so he hoped he could at least get some acknowledgement from them that slavery was wrong.

At 38:58, when you talked about the 100 days, I love the subtle French flag you made with the numbers of soldiers! Absolutely incredible episode, can’t wait to see what the future holds!

PaiHuaiTe

Revolutions of 1848 and the Crimean war next? Or are we finally gonna see who wins in the Octavian/Antony dispute?

kayle

Incredible! Absolutely phenomenal!

Smeed Peed

Flashbacks to older episodes when you start showing the Italian peninsula!

Morrissey the Vegan Bore

Wonderful video as ever, HC. I would love to see movies based on the lives of Metternich and Castlereagh (who ended up committing suicide 7 years after this).

Jesse McGonigle

Loved the detail in describing the geopolitical motivations and negotiation maneuverings that occurred; really makes one appreciate just how delicate and significant the Congress of Vienna was. If I was to give one piece of criticism - I wish there was some more time spent on the analysis of the long-term impacts of the decisions made (or not made), especially in connection with your previous video on "Peace...?" which discussed the Realist, Marxist, and Liberal views. There was some of that pushed to the ending part of the video, but some of that analysis throughout the video would have been interesting, I think, as the earlier parts of the video often felt too descriptive/narrative and too focused on just what happens within the congress itself (although still very enjoyable). If you're planning on discussing larger-picture impacts more in later videos though (especially since this video is already pretty long), that is also awesome and I look forward to that! disclaimer - I'm not in any way an expert in european history or in how to make a educational/entertaining video btw; this is just a perspective from a curious layperson viewer :)

BEEFY

Nathan Goldbaum

Be honest, how many takes did it take for you to say BEEFy without laughing?

Seabass DiGiorno

What language(s) were being used during these negotiations? With all these different countries, I have to imagine there are some difficulties communicating. Great video as always!

Stephen

Excellent as always. Can't wait to see how the Concert of Europe throws a few strings by '48.

Phootreese

The World's Biggest Baby came out of that one looking no worse for wear. That's Realpolitik! :D

adhd lama

This was so amazing, love it!

Andrew McMenemy

This was great, I feel you explained the rather complex dynamic of this time period very well. The fact that I was glued to my screen for 50 minutes without a moment of inattentiveness speaks for itself! As always, well done my friend!

Mo

Are you going to do more 19th century videos in the future? I get the feeling the “boats” play into that somehow. Probably just looking into it too much 🤷🏻‍♂️

David Goebel

Amazing work as always. I finally decided to become a patron! I can’t wait for what’s next: More Roman Civil War stuff or maybe even Alexander the Great :)

Michael Cortez

I joined your patreon for the glory of rome, and stayed for the high quality content, keep it up!

AzzaRudders

Another banger. This period really fits the narrative style that distinguishes these videos IMO, absolutely loving it.

Joseph Barnes

One small pedantry: Portugal did have colonies north of the equator at that point. Goa was one, Macau could be the other but they probably hadn't actually declared so by then.

Patrick Siu

They had problems with independance movements there for a decade before they gave it up to France ~1897. And they werent really in a position to hold it far away from their continuous territory.

Lukas

Really well done, a lot of respect for sticking on the half hearted measures surrounding the Enslavement of people.

Tom

So was Austria just fine with giving up the Austrian Netherlands to the Netherlands Netherlands?

Joshua Evans-Lowell

Great video! The indictment at the end was really well done and argued. The hearts around joe biden kinda awkward, but I guess Castlereigh and Biden are imperialists of a different sort in a sense.

Venetus

I really hope the ending is a teaser for a future look into Otto Von Bismarck and Prussia’s involvement in the formation of the German Empire

Joshua Deykin

Another great vid- It's time for the theatre! I have to go!

ForceForHistory

The Americans actually abolished the slave trade in 1808, ironic given their reputation these days. It was unconstitutional to forbid it any earlier. They too had when they passed the thing that it would die out in a generation. Oh boy were they wrong. In the US that was largely from things like mechanization of cotton production. In the Caribbean and Brazil, it was due to the literal lifespan of slaves themselves.

Robert Jarman

You are unmatched, thank you for opening my eyes years ago to our origins.

Nico

A day were you post a video is a glorious day

Adam Babcock

With everything going on right now, this series couldn’t be better timed. (Also interesting to see parallels to today with Russia being.....difficult)

Will Blasingame

Also, not sure if this is important but I am interested in the parts of Netherlands that were part of the German Confederacy? Same with Denmark and some of Schleswig-Holstein in the Confederacy? Did they have the same opt out of no foreign relations that Prussia and Austria get?

Ryan Somelofske

I was lucky enough to have really wonderful, fair and brutally honest history teachers and professors. But I don't think in any Western Civ class did we even come close to touching the soft proposal to abolish the slave trade and the long term failures. It was incredibly interesting history, being the one time we returned to the Central Committee!!

Ryan Somelofske

Man, Tsar Alexander is about as childish, unreasonable and prone to violence as Putin is

Rard

A shot of Vodka every time "Poland" is being said.

Bit Moto

You've outdone yourself yet again.

Gintaras Valentukonis

This is one of the best (if not the best) videos you have ever published. The level of detail was incredible. If you are new to learning about the 19th centrury, this video is a must-see.

Tyler Pokela

Fantastic stuff, as always! Considering everything that happened in the following 100 years (both inside and outside Europe) and how difficult it was to achieve the concert in the first place, it really is astounding that WWI took as long as it did.

Bryton J Swan

Fantastic video! I hope this isn't the end of the peace stuff, though.

Erik Granger

Joe Biden joke is an all timer. Another banger, king.

T G BYAM SHAW

Good stuff!

Stefan Mauermann

Hell yeah Squares

LiterallyJudas

What a ride

Ria Mayer

10:50 hits real hard right now and I kinda love it.

Sam Aronow

Yay

Jun Lee

Thanks HC! Good job!

Rard

Pog, great video as always

ETossed

I couldn't help but think about the issue of slavery and how much the negotiations around it look like the negotiations happening today around the issue of global warming. What they have in common are the big economic impacts resulting in their curtailment.

Hollywood Outsider

Good video! now do one for the peace of Westphalia :P

Dhjaru

I can't wait to see the newest "Boats!" moment.

Rick Aiello

All these international relations videos you have been doing are great and extremely relevant right now. Glad you paused the rome series for this now.
