The Congress of Vienna (Part 1) (1814)
At long last! More 19th century content!
Try not to flip your dang lids, but it's another video sans squares. We got paintings, we got portraits, we got people's faces, it's a whole new visual world baby.
I was torn for a long time about doing a Part 1 and a Part 2, but once I realized that *both parts* would turn out to be the longest videos I'd ever done, I figured that splitting it in two and getting the first half released ASAP was the only humanitarian thing to do. The People demand their fix! I know!
The good news is that the next video is already written, the audio is already recorded & edited, and I'll be able to start animation on it next week. Unless something catastrophic happens during the animation process, that video's release shouldn't be too too too far away.
Stay safe everyone! It's real bad right now, but I'm hopeful that things will look a lot brighter in 30 days. The entire world is doing the "Don't Get Covid 30-Day Challenge," and it friggin' sucks. Stay strong, and be extra vigilant!
Hey there, I don’t want to nit pick or rain on your parade but there is something noteworthy I would like to bring up, even if it is a minor point. Early in the video, you state that France had the best army. While true 5 years earlier, it really doesn’t hold up. France went from ~650,000 troops when marching on Russia down to ~100,000 before it made it to Poland. During that time, there were tremendous losses to horses (calvary and supply), rifles being left by the dead, and cannons being left behind. This would not only continue to be an issue while he retreated, but happened again and again. Notably at the battle of Leipzig, best known for the blown bridge, had a very high amount of general being wounded into retirement but also outright killed (close to 20 if memory serves).
To illustrate why that is important, to prepare for what would be known as the six day campaign, Napoleon had committed to his 3rd conscription levy, where we are getting the bottom of the barrel, troops that were so unqualified and rushed to battle that a literal French marshal (Marmont) had to personally teach a conscript how to load a rifle *during* battle. Another notable issue was that during the six day campaign, napoleon won some significant battles, but could never capitalized on victories or routes because he lacked horses for the calvary to pursue.
At the end of Napoleon’s reign, the French army, while respectable in size, was made of untrained dredges. There were so few cannons left that napoleon-style tactics could not be used, and horses were few and far between, the French army was held together by reused duct-tape and paper clips.
Just my thoughts, the rest of the video is just… delightful and full of things I has forgotten or don’t believe I ever knew, as are all of your videos, my only complaint is to the length between the releases. But that is the catch-22 of their high quality, and I will happily pay that. Thank you for your work!
