I think if we lived 2000 years ago we would have viewed him in the same light as Leopold or Hitler but since we weren't the victims and have no dog in the fight(unless you're French) we would not necessarily see it the way we see more recent events.

i would say genocide is an overstep. if caesar walked into gaul and every tribe immediately capitulated there would have been no war. caesar didnt kill for killing's sake. he did try to eliminate tribes that were particularly troublesome, but that was to crush resistance and to put fear into the others. its not much different from the fall of carthage or alexander's razing of thebes, these just happen to be smaller and more distinct groups of people. brutal yes, but lets not put caesar on the same list as hitler
