Werewolves 3: Cover Art Process

Art process for Phillip Simpson's gorgeous cover for Werewolves 3: Evolution's End! We had three options, and ended up using elements from two of them together for the final result!

This is my original description, sent to the artist for direction:

Our nameless protagonist werewolf from the first 2 covers is standing in a burning laboratory that looks like it's been used in biological experiments. The environment is sleek and modern--impressive if it weren't currently on fire. The color scheme should be fairly dark, the tone gritty and violent. Fluorescent lighting is installed in the ceiling of the room, but most of them have been destroyed during a violent altercation, leaving one or two lights to cast ominous shadows over the scene. Maybe one of them (the long, tube kind of bulb) is hanging from the ceiling at an angle, still connected on one end and lit, if that can be fit into the composition. If not, that's okay too. The only other source of light is the fire, and the orange/red is casting light on the protagonist's body from one side while the fluorescent lights it from the other side, preferably from the back. The protagonist werewolf should look similar to the other two covers--shirtless or in a very torn shirt streaked with dark gore and slash marks.

There's a militia leader sprawled at the protagonist's feet. He's holding a handgun, but he's too wounded to raise it and use it. They've just been in a fight and the protagonist has clearly won out, though not without a few singed hairs and deep cuts. The werewolf may be holding onto the militiaman, most likely by the neck or by his tattered uniform. They're staring at each other.

The militia leader is ex-military, around 50 years old. His hair is in a crew cut and he's wearing an urban camo shirt and pants. (If the urban camo doesn't fit with the scene, color-wise, it can be changed to whatever does fit, as long as he still looks like a militia man.) There's a patch on the arm of his outfit with the bold letters HSM on it that should be visible to the viewer.

The protagonist werewolf is looking at the man angrily, like he wants to kill him, but he's hesitating--thinking it over before he does something he can't take back. (The militia man is the werewolf's father, who has betrayed him at every turn and is trying to 'cure' and kill werewolves. He's an irredeemable antagonist, but the protagonist isn't sure yet if he can kill his father.)
