I honed my descriptive skills by reading and writing a lot. It made it much easier to DM, and would push my vocabulary to its limits. But it was fun too.
Finding new and interesting ways to tell a player the monster they are fighting is dead.
"Your rapier flashes and moves in front of your opponent who frantically swats it away with it's leathery arms and claws, but your sudden jab catches it off guard and you manage to skilfully stab under its arm, piercing its vital organs. It lets out a wail of pain and then a screech of desperation before being truncated and collapsing to the floor dead, eyes wide open and jaws aghast."
It helps if you have a good imagination yourself of course too.
