I particularly liked your points around the signaling effect of poor scenario design. If you tell your players you essentially have to enter Greenest in that instance, what are they supposed to think in the future when you throw a beholder or a lich at them at Level 3? If they learned anything from Greenest, then presumably the right call is to charge headlong at the enemy regardless of the odds. Your players will have no confidence in the logic of your world.
