I Live

First, an apology for the lack of new posts over the last month. The real world has, unfortunately, kept me busy lately. Beyond that, I've hit several significant rough patches with the development of sha-Arthan's rules that I'm still working through. In particular, I'm contemplating weakening the traditional D&D-like class arrangement for something looser so as to accommodate a wider range of options for characters. This has caused me no end of angst, but I'm buoyed by the advice and insights of my internal playtesters who are encouraging me to craft the rules as I think best.

Not all is angsty, however! I've got more monster art to share, as well as other little tidbits about the setting that are coming more sharply into focus. Several core ideas of the setting and its backgrounds have fallen into place and it's my hope that this will make going forward a bit easier. Mind you, this is a very bumpy process, so we shall see.

In any case, I very much appreciate everyone's continued patience and support. They mean a lot to me, especially as I wrestle with my latest harebrained schemes.

That's a very valid perspective and one I largely share. That said, realism (however defined) was – and is – important to certain segments of the hobby, particularly those of a more "simulationist" bent. It's not really my cup of tea, admittedly, but it's not a new concern by any means.

Hi James, this is a response to your recent post on "Fantasy Realism." I shake my head a little at people who are focused on "realism" in a game with spells, dragons and magic items. Wasn't the hobby always a fun escape, not a religion? I think Tolkien said it best.“I have claimed that Escape is one of the main functions of fairy-stories, and since I do not disapprove of them, it is plain that I do not accept the tone of scorn or pity with which 'Escape' is now so often used. Why should a man be scorned if, finding himself in prison, he tries to get out and go home? Or if he cannot do so, he thinks and talks about other topics than jailers and prison-walls?” ― J.R.R. Tolkien

By "latest," do you mean the 7th edition or the reprints of the 2nd edition?

James Maliszewski

Have you done a review of the latest version of the Call of Cthulhu RPG, 7th ed yet? A review of the 2nd edition reprints would also be good.
