The Undead

There are a great many types of undead beings in sha-Arthan, ranging from the nearly-mindless dritlor to the vengeful kelthaga and the mighty gorodaka. All of them will be described and illustrated in the setting's bestiary. For the moment, though, I just wanted to share with you an early sketch of the dritlor, a low-level undead opponent and a creation of the Necromancy sorcerer spell.

Perhaps when we encounter a new creature James will let the player characters name it, as we would be the the professionals in need of categorized knowledge.

"to the seasoned adventurer specific names would be important to define the abilities and potential threat levels of the various flavors of necrofactured creatures" Well, yes, if an adventurer were a product of a Modernist (bourgeois) upbringing and mindset in which categorization and regimentation are Important Concepts. From what I can tell from what we know of the setting and extrapolating from there, the PCs are basically brought up in a pre-Modern environment, so they'll be exposed to stories, myths, and legends that would surely include at least some of the named creatures and at least some idea of their descriptions, weaknesses, powers, etc. (but not from the point of view of categorized knowledge to be articulated at need by professionals), and one could argue they'd be able to use at least some of that knowledge should they meet these creatures of legend. But what about the monsters that _aren't _ in the stories? Assuming the PCs survive encountering them, the names wouldn't matter aside from directly descriptive ones eg a "many-headed giant lizard" instead of a "hydra".

I think names are important. I am sure the unsophisticated bumpkin would refer to all undead as reanimated abominations, but to the seasoned adventurer specific names would be important to define the abilities and potential threat levels of the various flavors of necrofactured creatures. The various labels may be esoteric but important to those dealing with them. Will your character see; Angus, Holstein and Hereford, or just generic cattle? Schooner, Frigate, and Sloop, or just generic ship?
