Progress Update: Dogeared

The progress is slow(?).

It feels like I’ve been working on (essentially) the same asset since graphic design for this video began: this dang book-with-turning-pages thing. It looks great in the sneak peek I shared the other day, but it’s a nightmare the way I prepared it in that gif. What you’re looking at there is a complicated bait-and-switch where, yes, the pages are moving in 3d spaces, but they’re 2d assets. That means they can’t have a fron/back on their own. I had to string things together in a weird way where, on some frames the back page is on the higher layer, in some frames it’s on the lower layer. This is not exactly what you’d call “wieldy”, especially if you’re trying to sub out new assets here and there.

So I’ve gone in and turned this whole thing into a templating process. Instead of faking one single page turn effect, I’m making a single solid one designed to last. I’ve got it all ready for a newer-looking book asset that’ll appear later in the process—now I’ve got to retrofit that old book asset from the gif I shared the other day. I spent twenty-or-so minutes working on that precise process, but fate is a mosquito buzzing in your ear that you can never quite slap. I’d accidentally applying all the edits to the newer-looking book asset instead of the copy of that asset.

All hail the great and powerful ctrl+z.

On the positive side, Felipe is doing great work so far. He’s completed some awesome-looking sketches that we’ll be using throughout the video, and now I’m waiting to see what all his taleoids look like. They’re definitely going to be just a little different from mine, but I don’t think that’ll be a bad thing in the end. Mine tended to be extremely rigid, where I feel his will be a little more comfortable/animated.

We shall see, though! I’m excited.
