Daily Update: THIS ONE MATTERS

Hey guys!

I know a lot of these are just kinda idle blathering about what we're doing and how I'm feeling or whatever, but this one's actually got a bit of information that should matter to you financially.

Patreon is changing the way you pay for pledges.

Starting December 18th, instead of making creators pay for processing fees (~$0.38-0.58 per transaction), they're shifting that burden over to the patrons. This is a compulsory change, meaning there's no opt-out or anything like that, which feels pretty bad. It's annoying, but, in the end, I think it's a pretty positive thing.

Patreon is all about small threads coming together to weave a large tapestry. A dollar a month from a large network of fans allows a project that costs many thousands of dollars to exist, and that's a pretty amazing thing. Right now, the way processing fees work is a little antithetical to that. Our friend Peter Mohrbacher over at the Angelarium patreon is losing $600/mo in processing fees alone, which would only cost each of his individual patrons an extra $0.38-$0.58 to cover. We take a similar hit, but on a much smaller scale.

This mostly impacts patrons at the $1 tier, because it technically increases the cost of your pledge by around 40%. But the nominal fee remains the same across the board($0.38-$0.58), so someone pledging $75 (looking at you, Nik), will actually only be charged an additional .005%.

All that said, you come first. We love and appreciate the support you give us, but if it's going to hurt you or your livelihood in a significant way, we want to make sure you feel no obligation or pressure to give us that money. 38 cents doesn't sound like a lot, and realistically, it isn't, but the value of the change in your pocket is for you to determine. And on the more realistic side, some of you are supporting a lot of creators. If you're supporting 50 patreons each at the $1 tier, you're suddenly paying an extra $19 a month, which is definitely significant.

So by all means, if this is a painful change for you, do what you think is best. You've always supported us, and in what ever small way we can, we support you. If you want to read more about this, you can read the official Patreon post here.

Thanks for everything. The new video should be out really soon, and in another 24 days we'll have a really special gift for you guys.
