1993 Sega PR Slides
Added 2018-05-10 01:51:27 +0000 UTCHi backers! It's been a while since I did any kind of "behind-the-scenes" post, so I thought I'd show you a quick little thing I worked on today.
The following are slides that Sega included in a circa-1993 press kit. I don't have the kit itself, but its owner very kindly let me borrow the slides to scan them.
If you were reading video game magazines at the time, you've probably seen a ton of these before. But now you can see them in...slightly more detail!

This is the unreleased Sega VR, a unit that would have attached to the Sega Genesis console. If you've heard of it, you've probably seen this slide before...it's the only photo they ever released!

Another unreleased product: this is Bounty Hunter, a game that would have utilized Sega's Activator peripheral.

A behind-the-scenes photo showing the making of Jurassic Park on the Sega CD. Note the dinosaur models everywhere!

The original Jurassic Park for the Genesis.

The unaltered box art for Sonic Spinball, as painted by the late, great Greg Martin.

Sonic Chaos for the Game Gear (as captured through a rare Game Gear development kit that had video output!)

A promotional image for The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, the syndicated cartoon series.

Aladdin's popular Sonic the Hedgehog lunchbox.

Virtua Racing...I believe this is a photo of the arcade version?

NFL Football '94

World Series Baseball. It's been 25 years but the batter sprite still makes me do a double take. What a nice looking screen.

An early shot of Panic on Funkotron, back when it was simply "Toejam & Earl 2."

It's the Surf Ninjas, on the set of the movie Surf Ninjas, playing the Surf Ninjas game for Game Gear.

Eternal Champions. Something about the analogue warmth of this screenshot makes my brain feel nice.

Shinobi III. Note the infinite lives and weapons in this early "debug" build.

Sonic dancing at the 1993 KIIS and Unite concert, an AIDS benefit the company sponsored. You can see another shot from this moment here.

Product shots for the model 2 Genesis and its Sega CD cousin.

And finally, a still from one of Sega's commercials., which you can watch here.
BONUS TIME
Here's two slides from the unveiling of Nintendo's "Ultra 64," which would later be renamed Nintendo 64:

That makes sense! I was just trusting the text on the slide.

2018-05-10 03:18:45 +0000 UTCGood stuff. The rebranding of the N64 has always fascinated me. You can see the lineage: NES, Super NES, Ultra NES? But clearly someone wanted the 64 in there badly enough to break the pattern, and at that point, I guess you might as well do something entirely different.

2018-05-10 02:39:56 +0000 UTCAwesome shots! The Sonic Chaos screenshot is actually from the Master System version (released only in Europe) and features a darker palette and a different running animation. The photo previously only appeared in the UK 'Sonic The Comic' in a preview of the game.
