World Exclusive SimCity NES Screenshots

Hi all! I'm working on a big article about the unreleased NES version of SimCity, but since it's coming together a little slower than I expected, I thought I'd send along some screenshots to whet your appetite.

You're actually the first people to EVER see direct emulator screenshots of this game!

As you can see, most of the features Nintendo added for the SNES version are present here, including Dr. Wright.

Some of the game is a lot different than the SNES version, such as this bank screen.

These two shots illustrate that the monster was still generic - they hadn't yet changed it to be Bowser. Similarly, there's no Mario statue yet either.

I'm hoping  to have something published in the next two weeks. It's not often that we get a peek at unfinished work that came straight from Nintendo, so I'm trying to make a big splash with this one.

Is there anything in particular you're hoping to learn about this? Let me know in the comments. I might even have an interview lined up...

I doubt they could recycle much of the NES-specific code, but FWIW I'm pretty sure both versions use the same C-ported city simulation code that was provided by Maxis to run the internal logic (they ported it from the original C64 assembly version to C in order to port and release the Amiga and Mac versions in 1989).

It's a completely different soundtrack done by the same composer, Soyo Oka. She carried over one of the themes when she did the SNES soundtrack, but the rest was completely started over from scratch.

I'd love to know how the music compares to the SNES - I've wanted to know more about the original Famicom compositions of the music ever since I learned it was the original platform.

Could they use the same code as a jumping off point for the SNES version or did they have to start from scratch?

How's the performance?

Why was it unreleased? Just the usual too late in the life cycle thing?
