FOM: Maguma (Concept Art)

Funny that Gezora, which was done much later and used the initial design virtually unaltered ended up being one of the most popular concepts in the project yet while Maguma, which had a much longer development process, was just alright. Many Maguma redesigns merely make it a giant pinniped, but that is so dull and also canonically incorrect because Maguma is actually a reptile, so I refused to go for such a bland and predictable classification.
While Maguma may have been quite ugly in the final product, the initial sketch was, as you can see, even more hideous. I toned down the grotesqueness considerably when the aesthetic of the project became more general rather than just Shin Godzilla-inspired monstrousness. I can't remember now if it was meant to be some sort of post-human or simply a non-human hominid, but either way the message is easily gotten across of an ape mushed crudely into the shape of a walrus.

2023-06-10 17:30:32 +0000 UTCit kinda looks like the monster from the walrus, where an insane old sailor lures, traps and then preforms surgery on someone to make them look like a walrus.
