FOM: Gaira & Sanda (Concept Art)
Added 2023-05-14 08:16:32 +0000 UTCColoured sketches of the Gargantuas; these were one of the more difficult kaiju to design owing to their restrictive and humanoid designs. The first iterations were so hard to piece out and rather ugly (partly because they were drawn on a very small scale), so I completely redid them both for a second go around, giving them much more defined and acceptably distinct and not-totally-hideous appearances, which are more-or-less their final designs. So, they're one of the few kaiju so far which have had two rounds of coloured concept art.
Sanda's design was partly more primate-like and golem-like, although still fundamentally human, with lots of faint vegetation etched into his fur and plate-like skin. Gaira's design was more oni-like, especially with the tusks, and his skin is scaly rather than plated, with partial webbing between the fingers to hint at his semi-aquatic existence. It was also heavily inspired by the appearance of the Guardian Ape from Sekiro, especially with the elongated nails. The dark colour of Gaira's teeth was inspired by photos of mountain gorilla teeth (which are stained by a tannin-rich diet). I also thought it was important to consistently portray Sanda with more human-like poses, while Gaira was always more bestial in his posture.
