RJ Ramblings

Hey everybody! I don't think I have a whole lot to ramble about today. Things have been pretty chill around here the last week.

We're getting settled in at the house now. Am able to relax a little bit more this week than I have been. Actually got back to painting miniatures some. Played a little bit more Diablo 4. Had some free time aside from working and cleaning and unpacking. Still a lot of that as well though.

I'm really liking my office space as well. It's sort of an office/hobby room, so I have some space in here for Lego and miniatures and stuff too. I love it. Having a room dedicated to working in is just amazing. Not having to worry about my monitor being on and showing the filth I make to anybody who passes through my living room feels so good.

Played D&D yesterday and had a great night. We're starting a new campaign, which I'm running, and I've been excited about it for some time. So actually getting going on it is super fun.

And that's really about it. Feeling great at the moment, happy to be working, happy to be living here, happy with just about everything.

Love ya!

That's cool. I did a three-and-an-eighth part* campaign that spanned a few decades, but I had the players make new characters for each part (though their previous characters lived on either as NPC's or off-screen influences.) Maybe I could convince them to come back as higher level versions of themselves for a part four! (The eighth was a two-session "one shot" midquel that took place after the events of part two, but before part three, and was mainly a way for me to honor one of our players, who had unexpectedly passed away. Not to end this on a downer.)

My players don't really like writing too much, so not making then write. But I told them to think about what their characters are doing in the interim. And I gave them a couple of magical items that I thought fit their characters well and told them to come up with a little story explaining how they obtained the items. So, nothing major, as the interim doesn't matter too much. I did the time skip mostly because an npc they met at low levels plays a big part later and needed a couple years between the two plot points.

Are you having them write what happened to their characters in the two-year interim? Or is that not going to be particularly plot-relevant? I'm curious because I've thought about doing something similar in a campaign but wasn't sure how to pull it off without complicating things too much.

Szass Tam WAS in the movie. He is the lich who is the leader of the Red Wizards and did the ritual to turn them all undead. The movie is what made me want to do a Red Wizard campaign. The level structure of this one is a little weird. I actually had them start at 1 and we've played three sessions, which took them up to 3. But now we're skipping 2 years into the future and they're going to be level 9. There is also going to be a point mid-campaign that they're going to switch to different characters for a while, before combining them in the end. Like I said. Very epic campaign. I've never really ran a campaign like this. I tend to prefer things that are more local and focused on personal relationships with npcs, but this one is very plot heavy and not as character driven. Should be interesting.

Is it a pre-written/modular or self-written? (I would guess self-written since you're a writer, but I don't want to assume anything.) Oops, never mind, I guess I should finish reading before I start typing. =P I saw "you can ask" and just jumped in. Compiling ideas into a new narrative is pretty cool too, and definitely takes skill. I hope it all goes great. Are the players starting out at first level, or are you jumping in later with more powerful characters? I've always wanted to be in a game that goes from 1 to 20, but it's never happened. Also, Szass Tam, he was in the movie, right? Or mentioned at least, I forget. (Even though I've been playing D&D for twenty-some years, both pen-and-paper and computer, my actual D&D lore knowledge is pretty abysmal.)

lol you can ask if you want. I love talking about my campaign, but I'll probably spend too much time going into the detail on it. Since we're just talking, there's not much to discuss, but it's probably the most epic game I've ever ran, with plans to travel all over Faerun. It's a story revolving around the Red Wizards, the Storm Giants, and the Old Gods. It will eventually end with the death of Szass Tam. It's not all an original story, but I've combined a lot of sources into a singular campaign and filled in the gaps a lot.
