When I start designing a character, I start with a basic idea of what they are like. Renegade was a new guy, a young athletic dude who thought to himself one day 'yeah, I can do that', made a costume, and started looking for trouble.
OK, so that didn't work out so well for him.
In designing him, then, I want something simple, something a real guy with little money or talent for it could produce. This is what takes the time - trying various looks and seeing what comes out the other end. Renegades original look was 'motorcycle gang' but then I remembered I have a motorcycle gang villain group AND that the only other reasonable-looking motorcycle jacket I have doesn't do well in many circumstances. Also, the pants for it suck. And also I have another hero I have not used in ages with a similar look (Recoil).
After two or three hours playing around with it, trying various textures and colors, the only thing that survives from his initial costume is the tank top.
Sometimes it be that way.
I also wanted some pants that emphasized the sexy, so I needed a pair where the fly would open.
I don't know if you guys know this, but everything about DAZ (the program I use to do all this) is female-focused because of so many people using it for straight p-r0n (Patreon has caught on to the most common obfuscation for That Other Word and I don't want this post getting flagged - remember, that all of this exists on thin ice and it will only get worse). The market follows after.. Female models outnumber male ones at least 4 to 1; clothes and hairstyles more so. So it happens that there is ONE designer making male pants that can open AND unzip the fly.
So, Renegade gets one of those.
