Instant Ick Words (in Romance Novels)

Since so many of you shared my distaste in my update for the word "lover", let me share my pain with you further :) A shortened version of this will be on YouTube on Monday, but you know how it is with YouTube shorts, they have to be under 60s. TikTok, of course, will only let you monetise if you're OVER 60s. And so it goes.

$5+ patrons, I'll see you in a few hours for the livestream!

Comments

I see an increasing number of comments online using the word female, as in "a female" without a noun following it. Saying a female horse works, female clothing, female perspective, female human even - but a female human is a woman or a girl. Even in the phrasing police use they include a noun: female suspect. Or in science: female subject. NOT "a female read a book."

I completely agree with panties, and knickers is another one up there in terms of underwear descriptions. I haven't been able to take the L###r word seriously since Soo Drouet used it in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves; don't ask me why, but that excruciatingly short exchange struck something in me and immortalised itself in my longterm memory for absolutely no good reason, and still makes me chuckle. As for other words, moist and spoon may be common ick words, but they just make me giggle (yes, I'm a grown man and I giggle, and I'm proud of it) or snicker. There is only really one other word that makes me uncomfortable, and it makes me so ... eugh ... I'm deliberately not thinking about it right now (tangents and parallels work wonderfully), so I'm definitely not writing it, but there is nothing right about those... those... '''homeless snails''' !!! N.B.: anyone being 'funny' and replying to this with the actual name for those... things... will be tracked down and flogged with a branch like they were a broken down car.

So, I shouldn't say, "their lovers moist panties while making love"?

Magnus the Swede

Yup, these words check the same boxes for me!

Re: the L word; it has specific connotations to me, as a slightly illicit/not socially acceptable sexual relationship. The closest synonym would be mistress, but that has other meanings, is female-specific, and I'd consider more acknowledgeable than a L

ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

Katy

The only word I’m bothered by is β€œdaddy” used in the bedroom.

Alisa

I had gone my entire life without reading that phrase before...oh well XD

Jill Bearup

No, you would never do that. NeVeR.

I'm with you on panties (specifically when refering to grown women's underwear or anywhere near a sexual topic) and general infantilisation. There's something about "nether lips" that just make me go nope too.

Katrina Trigari

You do realise you're just asking for someone to comment on "their lovers moist panties." but I wouldn't do that, that would be gross.

Ekij

"Take care" whenever used by someone who isn't an enemy. "Take care. Of yourself. Because I'm certainly not going to do it any more. "
