Chapter 2291: Sent by the Shu Family and Shu Quan

Chapter 2291: Sent by the Shu Family and Shu Quan

Wan Yan gladly handed over the letter to Meng Yunzheng. Meng Yunzheng instructed Xia Yan, "Take the letter and deliver it directly to Mistress Hou. Let her know that this letter is from Young Master Wan and inform her of the situation here."

"Understood," Xia Yan replied as he left.

The physician arrived just in time to examine Wan Yan's injury. Fortunately, the injury wasn't severe; it was mostly superficial scrapes and a slight sprain. The physician advised Wan Yan to rest and not walk around for the rest of the day, checking on his condition again the next day.

Wan Yan didn't seem worried about the diagnosis; in fact, he seemed rather pleased. "Headmaster Meng, I didn't think my condition was this bad. I initially thought it was just a minor bruise, but now I can't even walk. It seems I'll have to trouble you today."

Meng Yunzheng had guessed the purpose of Wan Yan's visit and chuckled, "How can you consider it troubling? We have guest rooms in the academy, so feel free to rest. I can have someone escort you there. We can continue our conversation later when you're more comfortable."

"Thank you, Headmaster Meng."

After Meng Yunzheng arranged for Wan Yan's accommodations, he returned to the meeting. However, he couldn't help but feel curious about the contents of the letter.

Meanwhile, Xia Yan had hurriedly descended the mountain. After inquiring with local farmers, he learned that Shu Yu and Hou Shi were at a nearby villa. He rushed there immediately.

Shu Yu had just cut a slice of watermelon and, upon seeing Xia Yan's arrival, kindly offered, "You've come at the perfect time. This watermelon was just taken out of the well, and it's ice-cold. Here, have a piece."

Xia Yan thanked her but didn't immediately take the offered watermelon. Instead, he informed Hou Shi, "Mistress Hou, Young Master Wan has arrived."

Outside the academy, everyone referred to her as Mistress Hou.

Hou Shi had just taken a bite of the watermelon's tip when she heard Xia Yan's words. She blinked in surprise and asked, "Who did you say arrived?"

"Young Master Wan Yan."

The watermelon nearly slipped from Hou Shi's hand, and she looked astonished. "What is he doing here? Has something happened to the Wan family?"

"No, the Wan family is fine," Xia Yan replied, guessing that Wan Yan had come for an informal meeting with the two scholars. "Young Master Wan said he came here to deliver a letter to you."

Hou Shi's eyebrows furrowed in thought. "A letter sent from the southwest?"

"Yes," Xia Yan confirmed. "He mentioned that the letter was sent from the southwest."

Shu Yu paused in her steps, her eyes fixed on Hou Shi. "A letter from the southwest? Aunt Hou, have you been in frequent contact with someone from that region?"

Hou Shi shook her head in confusion. "No, I spent a year in the southwest, and I stayed at an inn for over half a year. After returning to the capital, I sent a few letters during the first year, but the inn personnel changed, and we didn't maintain much contact, especially during non-festive times. Sending a letter at this time seems even more unlikely."

While speaking, Hou Shi opened the envelope and began to read the letter. As she read, her expression became increasingly grim, and by the end, she had gasped in shock.
