After dealing with the matters concerning his children, the wealthy merchant finally thought about Wei Shi. Since Wei Shi live here and his concubines given birth to his children, he began to suspect that something might have happened to her, leading to his children's misfortune.
He rarely visited the courtyard where Wei Shi lived. Even when he needed to speak with her, he had always summoned her to him.
This time, he reluctantly went to the small courtyard, and it was the first time he had seen its condition.
To his astonishment, within his splendid mansion, there was such a shabby room with a leaky roof, and it didn't even have a proper bed. The entire courtyard was empty, with little of value except for a thin blanket and a few items of clothing. The only thing of note was the vegetables growing in the yard.
The wealthy merchant suddenly realized that the two maidservants who had been taking care of Wei Shi had taken away everything valuable from the courtyard and sold it. As for the bed frame in the room, Wei Shi had chopped it up during the cold winter to use as firewood.
The wealthy merchant was furious. He may not have valued Wei Shi, but she was useful as a figurehead. The fact that she couldn't even eat properly or keep warm was why his son had met with an accident.
What infuriated him even more was that Wei Shi was now missing!
When he questioned the two maidservants responsible for Wei Shi, he discovered that they had been neglecting their duties and hadn't checked on Wei Shi for three days. Consequently, they had no idea when Wei Shi had disappeared or how it had happened.
The wealthy merchant nearly choked on his own blood in anger and immediately sent people to search for her.
His first stop was Wei's family, but even they were in a state of confusion and fear upon hearing that Wei Shi had escaped.
The wealthy merchant then launched a city-wide search for Wei Shi but, unfortunately, had no success for half a year. He began to believe that Wei Shi's disappearance was the cause of all his recent misfortunes.
After dealing with the two negligent maidservants, he grew even more desperate to find Wei Shi. However, his resources were dwindling, and he could no longer afford to search effectively.
Furthermore, he was no longer able to suppress Wei's family as he had before. They took advantage of the opportunity and escaped back to the capital.
"This is the whole story, and I've told you everything," Wei Tang said with a grim expression. "We've also had a tough time. When we left the capital city, we sold our house, and when we returned, we didn't even have a place to live. We had no money, and my mother passed away. It was then that I had the idea to involve Gouwa."
Aunt Hong was taken aback. "Your mother passed away?"
"Yes," Wei Tang replied in a low voice. "We walked back to the capital, and it took us several months. My mother's health was not good before, and she was on the verge of having a stroke. She fell ill on the way, and she didn't make it."
Aunt Hong didn't know what to say. She wanted to say that it served them right, but she refrained from doing so. If it weren't for their excessive greed and insistence on leaving the capital, they wouldn't have ended up in this situation.
"So you really have no idea where Gouwa's mother is now?" Aunt Hong asked.
Wei Tang raised his head and said, "I really don't know. If I did, I would have..." He didn't finish the sentence, but it was clear he wanted to find her to seek some help.
Afterward, he turned to look at Shu Yu and said, "Miss, I've explained everything. Please give me the antidote quickly. It's almost been an hour. If you don't give it to me now, I'll die, and that will involve a human life. The authorities won't let you off, right?"
