The timing was just right when Shu Yu arrived; it was almost six o'clock.
Everyone who was supposed to attend Ruan's mother's burial had already gathered, and Shu Yu was the last to arrive, but no one dared to blame her.
In fact, before her arrival, Ruan's brothers had secretly hoped she would oversleep and not show up at all.
Ruan's brothers and their wives wore mourning attire, and Shu Yu watched them silently. She wasn't really here to pay her respects to the old lady. Therefore, when the person distributing white mourning caps and ropes approached her, they hesitated to offer them to her. Seeing that she didn't intend to accept them, they quickly retracted their hands and moved on.
Even Ruan Hai was present, though he didn't need to be there for Ruan's mother's funeral. However, Shu Yu had insisted on coming, so he had no choice but to force himself to accompany her. He looked tired and fatigued, clearly having not slept well the night before, and he yawned from time to time.
When the clock struck six, the sound of suona, gongs, and drums resounded as the villagers carried Ruan's mother's coffin out.
Ruan's brothers and their wives followed, weeping loudly.
People carrying offerings, setting off firecrackers, and holding flower wreaths followed one by one. Shu Yu didn't move until most of the people had left.
Ruan Hai intentionally walked beside her and whispered, "County Princess, there's no need for you to go through all this trouble. You've already paid your respects to Ruan's mother yesterday, and you even talked to her for quite a while. Ruan's mother must have felt your sincerity."
"Sending her up the mountain is still necessary. This way, I'll know the exact location, and next time there's good news in our family, I can come here and tell her in a timely manner, right?"
Ruan Hai choked on his words, cursing Shu Yu inwardly for being so petty. She had obviously heard about how the old lady died of anger, so she deliberately came here to provoke her further. Not only had she talked so much yesterday, but she was also continuing today.
Ruan Hai sneered inwardly but didn't say anything more, simply walking beside her. The group slowly made their way up the mountain.
By the time they reached the base of the mountain, the sky had started to brighten.
Shu Yu glanced at Ruan Chengqian and Ruan Chengchun, who were standing not far away. It seemed they were planning to wait until Shu Yu and Ruan Hai went up the mountain before searching for clues near the burial site.
Shu Yu retracted her gaze and quietly followed the procession as they ascended the mountain.
Ruan's mother's burial plot was next to her husband's, and the grave had already been dug. The mourners placed the coffin on the ground, scattered paper money, and then buried it amid the cries of Ruan's brothers.
After a flurry of activity on the mountain, when they descended, it was already past 8:30 in the morning.
Ruan Hai had been keeping a close eye on Shu Yu, thinking she might cause trouble during this visit. It wasn't just him; most of Ruan's brothers and the other villagers also had their eyes on her.
To their surprise, Shu Yu remained silent throughout the ceremony. She didn't cause any trouble and didn't say anything provocative, as she had done yesterday.
Even when the procession concluded, Shu Yu remained quiet.
Ruan Hai breathed a sigh of relief; it seemed that Shu Yu had decided not to cause any further commotion.
Shu Yu accompanied the group until the end of the ceremony. She hadn't caused any trouble, much to Ruan Hai's relief.
At the foot of the mountain, Ruan Hai couldn't help but ask, "County Princess, now that the funeral is over, would you like to rest here or return to the county?"
Shu Yu couldn't help but smile at his impatience. "I've been away for two days, so it's time to return. However, it seems that many villagers here want to plant sunflowers."
As soon as she spoke, several villagers crowded around. "Yes, County Princess, we want to plant them too. We have five mu of land that's perfect for sunflowers."
