Upon hearing this, Shu Yu and her companions were taken aback.

Ruan Chengqian asked in disbelief, "So, you deliberately let him drink alcohol and hit you to try and extract information from Ruan Kewei? That's too foolish. Why would you resort to self-harm like that?"

Lou Shi whispered, "I couldn't think of any other way in the short term, and after being beaten, I could immediately run back to my mother's house without arousing their suspicion."

"So, you think you couldn't wait because the County Princess is leaving tomorrow and time was running out?" Ruan Chengqian realized.

Lou Shi hesitated, admitting, "Yes, that's what I thought."

"I'm sorry; I didn't have time to explain everything to you back then. It's my fault. Did you think the County Princess was leaving in a hurry?" Ruan Chengqian said with some self-blame.

Lou Shi was briefly surprised because she did think that.

"Even if you and I had discussed it thoroughly, I probably would have made the same choice as I did now. It's not that you couldn't wait; it's that I couldn't wait. I didn't want to stay in the Ruan family for a moment longer. I'm willing to endure a beating, even half to death, just to get away from there!" Lou Shi said fervently.

The days at the Ruan family had been excruciatingly painful for her, and if she didn't leave now, there would be countless more instances of beatings and verbal abuse. She couldn't bear it any longer.

Shu Yu looked at the woman who had been tortured until she seemed to have lost all her spirit and became even more resentful of Ruan Hai's family. She glanced at her own belongings and finally took out two pieces of candy.

She only had two pieces of candy left.

"My sister once told me that eating candy makes the bitterness go away. Don't worry; I will help you get away from Ruan Kewei," Shu Yu said.

Lou Shi looked at the two pieces of candy, completely stunned.

No one in the room said a word as they listened to Lou Shi's stifled sobs.

It wasn't until half of the candy had melted that Lou Shi's emotions gradually stabilized. She wiped her tears with her sleeve and said, "I'm sorry; I got too emotional."

After drying her tears, Lou Shi continued to talk about Ruan Kewei's situation.

"He was originally drinking and dining with his friends outside, but it seems that my father-in-law is especially wary of the County Princess. When he learned that you had arrived and would be staying in the village, he became nervous and even called Ruan Kewei back. Ruan Kewei hadn't finished drinking, but he was enticed by the sight of the alcohol I had deliberately left in the room when he returned."

Having been called back home while he was in the middle of drinking, Ruan Kewei couldn't suppress his appetite for alcohol.

When he came back and saw the jug of wine, he naturally felt happy.

Afraid that Ruan Hai would stop him, he hid in the room to drink. Except for Lou Shi, no one else in the Ruan family knew about it.

Lou Shi waited until he was half-drunk and began speaking with him. She had wanted to inquire about Ruan Hai but was afraid he'd remember when he sobered up. So, she started subtly by asking about why her father-in-law had insisted on his early return that day.
