Shu Yu raised her head and asked, "What do you mean?"
Master Gan sighed, "You might not be aware, but ever since the incident involving the Chen family, Chen Qiu has been constantly bothering me."
Shu Yu remembered what he had said earlier, how Chen Qiu initially had an interest in Master Gan and later shifted her focus to Xun Sheng.
"Why, is she still fixated on you?"
"It's not that she's fixated on me, but on Brother Xun," Master Gan replied with a disapproving click of his tongue. He continued, "The Chen family has lost everything, and Chen Qiu is now living with the Pan family. She's basically a guest there. Due to the Chen family's affairs, the Pan family has been implicated and has a strong aversion to Chen He and his sister. You can imagine what life is like for them in the Pan family."
Chen He's situation was somewhat bearable as he had resigned himself to his fate and didn't care about the Pan family's criticism. He had thick skin and continued to stay with the Pans.
However, it was different for Chen Qiu. She was still a young maiden, and in these times, society was stricter towards women than men. With her current situation, no respectable family in Changjin Prefecture dared to marry her.
The Pan family had no intention of helping her either, and if this continued, she would have no future. Chen Qiu had no other choice but to clutch at the only lifeline left—Xun Sheng.
"But Brother Xun left Changjin Prefecture for home on the third day after the case was resolved, and she couldn't find him. Unexpectedly, because she couldn't find Ah Sheng, she came to the Gan family looking for me. She put on a pitiful act, claiming to be deeply in love with Ah Sheng and begged me to reveal his address. How could I possibly tell her?"
Master Gan not only refused to tell her but also made it clear to anyone who knew Xun Sheng's address that they should not disclose it to Chen Qiu.
Fortunately, Chen Qiu didn't know anyone else who knew Xun Sheng well, except for Master Gan.
Master Gan was annoyed. Every few days, he encountered her wherever he went. If he was out with friends, she would be lurking nearby. If he was dining at a restaurant, she would stand pitifully at the entrance, gazing at him. When he went to the Prefectural School to study, she would wait for him on the way.
Master Gan was thoroughly fed up with her. Whenever he tried to drive her away, she would flee, only to reappear later.
"She's truly relentless."
Shu Yu chuckled, "Have you tried talking to the Pan family?"
"I did," Master Gan replied irritably, "but Mr. Pan didn't come out to see me. Instead, he sent his daughter-in-law, who told me they couldn't do anything about it. Chen Qiu is already in her teens, and her legs are her own. The Pan family isn't a gang of thugs, how could they tie her down? It infuriated me to the point of nearly spitting blood. It's no wonder the Pan family raised a daughter like her; the whole family has the same character."
Master Gan was genuinely furious. His family was involved in the business of trading liquor, and they had a solid foundation.
Fine, if the Pan family wouldn't discipline Chen Qiu, he wouldn't hold back.
He used his family's influence to interfere with the Pan family's business. However, the Pan family only had two storefronts, and business had been bad due to the previous lawsuit, so this tactic had limited effectiveness.
However, the next day, Chen Qiu knelt before Master Gan, crying and pleading with him to spare the Pan family.
Master Gan was on the verge of tears himself. He couldn't stand Chen Qiu's shameless behavior.
"Usually, in such situations, I would suggest a more hands-on approach," Shu Yu remarked, "but I'm afraid she might accuse you of harming her."
Master Gan was close to tears. "I wish I could, but if I lay a finger on her, I'm even more afraid she'll accuse me." He couldn't possibly beat someone to death.
