This might be a fun topic... though it may be "old hat" for John. The story of Leon Crane, the WWII airman who survived 84 days in the Alaska winter after his plane crashed. The survival story is good, but the aspect I loved was the "follow the clues" fact-finding by writer John McPhee when he visited Alaska in the mid-1970s. (Doesn't everything somehow go back to John McPhee? :) By the 70s, the story had devolved into legend. When a trapper would say, "If it weren't for our cabins out there, that airman from WWII would not have survived." When McPhee asked, "What was his name?"... They would say, "I don't know, just some airman." Leave it to McPhee. :) Not really a topic request. This is just an "if it interests you, go for it." Cheers.
