2020-11-23 07:58:26 +0000 UTCBoomers like me probably best remember Louis (pronounced “Louie”) Nye for his PSA spots for the Keep America Beautiful campaign, where he appeared spearing litter with a spiked pole as “Louis Nye The Cleanup Man”. Since his usual persona was an ascot-wearing highbrow in the Dick Cavett or Tony Randall mode, I think the intention was to cast him comically off-type. As for the onion, my best guess is that Nye was practicing the old folk remedy of eating a raw onion whole to get rid of a cold.
