52-Confrontation with Anakin
Added 2024-12-05 19:03:08 +0000 UTCPadmé Amidala’s suite was bathed in the dim light of Coruscant, where endless lines of traffic shimmered like veins of light at the heart of the galaxy. Inside the room, Padmé sat on the edge of a couch, her hands clasped together and her gaze fixed on Anakin Skywalker, who paced nervously back and forth. His silhouette against the windows reflected not only the imposing figure of a warrior, but also that of a man caught up in his own conflicts.
“Anakin,” Padmé began, her tone delicate but firm, “I can’t go on like this. Everything that’s happening… what the Chancellor is doing, what the Republic is doing, it’s destroying what we swore to protect.”
Anakin stopped abruptly, turning to her with a scowl. “Padmé, you’re looking at this from the wrong angle. Everything Palpatine does is for the safety of the galaxy. He understands what it takes to win this war. The Jedi, the Senate… they’re all blinded by their own arrogance.”
Padmé stood up, moving closer to him. Her soft hand touched his cheek, forcing him to look at her. “And you aren’t? Aren’t you blinded by your loyalty to him? Anakin, he’s consolidating a power that won’t stop when the war is over. He’s manipulating you, and everyone else.”
Anakin turned her face away with a sharp gesture, his jaw set. “You don’t understand what it’s like, Padmé. What I’ve seen. What I’ve done to keep you safe, to protect you. The UNSC, the Jedi, they’re all conspiring against the Chancellor! He’s the only one who can bring true peace.”
Padmé sighed, trying to hold back tears. “True peace, Anakin? Through fear and control? What Palpatine is building isn’t peace. It’s an empire. And you… you’re helping it rise. I’m terrified for you, for what this is doing to you.”
Anakin took a step back, his expression hardening. “Terrified for me? Everything I do is for you, Padmé. Everything. You have no idea what I would be capable of doing to protect you!”
She stepped closer again, placing both hands on his chest. “I don’t want you to do more, Anakin. I don’t want you to continue down this dark path. I love you more than anything, but I can’t support you if you continue to defend someone who is destroying everything we believe in.”
Anakin, his face marred by confusion and pain, leaned toward her, resting his forehead against Padmé’s. “You don’t understand how I feel. I can’t lose you. If something were to happen to you, I couldn’t go on.”
She kissed him softly, her lips trembling as she did so. "Anakin, if you truly love me, please open your eyes. The Republic we love no longer exists. It is being destroyed by the Chancellor and those who support him. Help me stop it."
Anakin remained silent for a moment, closing his eyes to block out the emotions consuming him. But that peace was momentary. His eyes snapped open, his expression alert. "Wait."
"What's wrong?" Padmé asked, alarmed.
"There's someone here," Anakin murmured, walking toward the door with one hand on his lightsaber. "Several presences... are approaching."
In the hallway of the Senatorial Hotel, Shadow led his ODST team with the precision of a military watch. The droids' sensors projected three-dimensional holograms onto their visors, showing the distribution of enemy contacts advancing rapidly from the stairwells and elevators. The readings confirmed that the suite where Padmé Amidala and Anakin Skywalker were located was at the epicenter of the danger zone.
"Alert multiple mercenaries on the move," one of the droids announced in a mechanical tone. "Fifteen contacts detected on the immediate perimeter. Approaching from the lower level via the stairs and secondary entrances."
Shadow signaled to halt the team's advance. "Ambush formation. Alpha Team, cover the eastern entrance. Bravo Team, with me to the main corridor. Do not let anyone through."
As the ODSTs positioned themselves, the first group of mercenaries appeared on the thermal cameras. They carried plasma rifles and scatter shotguns, advancing cautiously. They did not know they were entering the lion's den.
Inside the suite, Anakin sensed danger before the sensors detected movement. His hand instinctively went to his lightsaber, igniting it with a hum that filled the room with a blue glow. His stance was defensive, but his gaze was filled with suppressed fury.
"Stay here," Anakin said, turning to Padmé with a mix of concern and authority. "Don't go out, no matter what. This doesn't make sense; they're after you."
Padmé, her face tense, tried to move closer. "Anakin, please. This doesn't have to be this way. There could be another explanation."
Before she could respond, an explosion rang out from the hallway. The door shook, and echoes of gunfire filled the air. Without hesitation, Anakin lunged for the entrance, using the Force to throw the door open. What he found on the other side was chaos.
In the hallway, the ODSTs had already begun their engagement with the mercenaries. Tracer rounds lit up the scene as droids projected energy shields to protect the UNSC soldiers' positions.
"Contact, two enemies neutralized," an ODST announced as he fired a precise burst that took down a mercenary who tried to flank them. "Rest of targets moving into the central corridor."
"Bravo Team, block access to the stairs," Shadow ordered as he took out a mercenary with a clean shot to the helmet. "Don't let them get close to the suite."
The mercenaries, noticing the presence of the UNSC soldiers, quickly reorganized. Two of them activated fragmentation grenades, launching them towards the ODST positions. Before the grenades could detonate, a UNSC droid extended an arm with a magnetic emitter, catching them in mid-air and redirecting them towards the enemy group. The resulting explosion rocked the hallway, leaving rubble and two fallen mercenaries.
Anakin, standing in the doorway of the suite, watched the brutality of the confrontation with a mixture of amazement and distrust. His lightsaber spun in his hands as he advanced toward the center of the hallway. Three mercenaries, seeing him, changed targets and opened fire on him.
Plasma shots deflected as they hit the blade of his lightsaber, illuminating the hallway with green and blue flashes. Anakin, in one fluid movement, used the Force to push two of them against a wall, knocking them unconscious. The third tried to fire again, but an ODST neutralized him with a precise shot to the chest.
On the main staircase, the battle continued with relentless ferocity. Two ODSTs dug in behind a toppled bank, firing at a group of mercenaries trying to break through.
“Suppressive fire, right,” an ODST shouted as a droid unleashed a volley of non-lethal rounds that disarmed the remaining attackers. “Zone secured. Clear movement to target.”
Meanwhile, Shadow and a droid advanced on Anakin, who stood in the middle of the corridor, his breathing heavy and his saber still ignited. The sight of the UNSC soldiers made him tense, turning his saber toward them.
“Skywalker,” Shadow said in a firm but measured voice. “Put your weapon down. We are here to protect Amidala, not harm her.”
“They are lying!” Anakin roared, his gaze filled with fury. “They are working with them! I saw them firing myself!”
Shadow held up a hand to calm him down. “We have neutralized the mercenaries who tried to assassinate her. Look at them, Skywalker. Those are not our men. But if you continue to engage us, we will not be able to accomplish our mission.”
At the other end of the hallway, the last of the mercenaries were neutralized by Alpha Team. A precision blast took out a makeshift entry point they had been using, securing the area completely.
“Targets eliminated,” an ODST reported. “The suite is secured.”
In Padmé Amidala’s suite, the air was thick with tension. Anakin Skywalker stood with his lightsaber ignited, its blue blade illuminating the room. His gaze shifted between Padmé, who tried to calm him with her words, and the UNSC ODSTs who stood firm at the entrance. Shadow, the team leader, calmly raised a hand, trying to defuse the situation.
“Skywalker,” Shadow said in a firm, controlled voice, “if we wanted to kill her, we wouldn’t be here arguing with you. But time is against us. There are mercenaries out there looking to finish what they couldn’t minutes ago, and if you don’t let us act, it could be too late.”
Anakin stepped forward, his lightsaber humming with every movement. “I don’t trust you,” he said, his tone filled with anger. “You are tools of a system I don’t understand, and I will not let you take Padmé.”
Padmé, with a mix of concern and tenderness, placed herself between Anakin and the ODSTs. “Anakin, please,” she pleaded. “They are not here to hurt me. They have come to save me.”
“Save you from who?” Anakin roared, his voice cracking with desperation. “From me? From the Chancellor? Padmé, you don’t understand. I am doing this to protect you.”
Before the situation could escalate any further, one of the droids activated a hologram in the center of the room. The imposing figure of Admiral Arnet appeared, projected in sharp focus, his face marked by experience and the gravity of the mission at hand.
“Skywalker,” Arnet began, his tone cold and authoritative. “I know you are confused. I know you doubt our intentions, but I assure you that we are not here to harm her. We are here because your Chancellor has put her in danger.”
Anakin frowned, his eyes flickering between the hologram of Arnet and Padmé. “That is a lie,” he muttered, though his voice lacked its usual strength. “The Chancellor would never put Padmé in danger. He only seeks to protect the Republic.”
“Protect her?” Arnet replied with a hint of sarcasm. “Skywalker, open your eyes. Your Chancellor sent mercenaries this very night with clear orders to assassinate Bail Organa and terrorize Padmé Amidala. This is not an assumption, it is a fact. And if you do not believe it, I will show you the proof.”
The hologram changed to project a series of intercepted transmissions. Coded messages, orders signed with Chancellor Palpatine's seal, and explicit instructions given to the mercenaries. The footage showed conversations between leaders of the armed group and operatives from the Chancellor's Office, discussing the terms of the mission.
Anakin watched the transmissions, his expression slowly changing from disbelief to confusion and then to palpable fear. His hands shook as his lightsaber lowered slightly. "This can't be real," he muttered. "Why would he do something like this? Why would he endanger Padmé?"
"To control you," Arnet replied harshly. "Because he knows what Padmé means to you. Palpatine is not a protector, he is a manipulator. He is using your emotions, your love, to keep you under his thumb. And what he can't control, he eliminates. Organa, Padmé... they are all pieces on his board."
Anakin slowly extinguished his lightsaber, but his gaze remained lost. "No, that doesn't make sense. He's helped me. He understands me... like no one else."
"Does he really?" Arnet questioned, leaning slightly toward the camera. "Or has he simply told you what you wanted to hear? Skywalker, the Chancellor sees you as a tool, not an ally. Tonight is proof enough that he has no qualms about sacrificing those you love to secure his power."
Padmé, tears in her eyes, took Anakin's hand. "Anakin, please. This is not a trick. I'm here with you, but I also know that something is very wrong. Let me go with them. I need to be safe. You need to think about all of this."
Anakin turned to her, his gaze full of conflict. "I can't lose you," he whispered, his voice laced with pain. "I can't let you walk away, not after everything I've done to keep you safe."
"Anakin," Padmé said, caressing his face gently. "I love you. But this love cannot blind you to what is happening. Trust me, please. If you love me, let me go."
At that moment, a boom echoed in the nearby hallway. The droids' sensors indicated new contacts rapidly approaching.
"Mercenaries in the hallway," an ODST announced as he raised his rifle. "They're attempting a last-ditch effort. We need to move now."
Shadow looked at Anakin directly. "Skywalker, decide quickly. You can stay here and debate while they try to finish her off, or you can trust us to get her out of here alive."
Anakin gritted his teeth, his face marred by an internal struggle. Finally, he stepped back, letting his arms fall to his sides. "Take her," he said in a defeated tone. "But if anything happens to her, I will find you. All of you."
Shadow nodded and motioned for the ODSTs to escort Padmé. As they passed Anakin, Padmé stopped and looked at him one last time.
"Please, Anakin," she said in a whisper, "think about what you're doing. Think about what this could mean for us."
Without saying a word, Anakin stood in the suite, staring out at the Coruscant skyline. The city lights reflected in his eyes, but his mind was in even greater chaos than before.
On the helipad, the ODST teams met up with Padmé, Bail Organa, and Breha. The UNSC transport took off quickly, disappearing into the city lights. Inside the ship, the atmosphere was tense but focused.
"This doesn't end here," Bail said, looking at Shadow seriously. "What happened tonight... it's just the beginning."
Shadow nodded, his face hidden behind his helmet. "We know that, Senator. But as long as we're here, they'll have a fighting chance."
Back at the hotel, Anakin Skywalker remained silent. His mind was spinning around what had just happened. Doubts about his loyalty to Palpatine were beginning to take shape, but the fear of losing Padmé continued to dominate him.
In the shadows of the galaxy, the UNSC had won a small but crucial victory, leaving behind a fractured Jedi and an increasingly cornered Chancellor.
