This week, our pal November returns to the show to talk about going on her first Live Action Roleplay (LARP).

She tells us about the hobby, what the LARP community looks like, and how it accommodates newbies and veterans. She tells us about the virtue of meeting your online friends in real life, and how these kinds of communities can provide a comforting, protective space, in part because of how it is deliberately removed from the social relations that mediate our online lives.

But first, Phoebe has a wonderful new Goo to tell us about.

You can read about November’s experience on the LARP, here: https://novemberkel.ly/2025/07/06/wing-and-a-prayer/

Oh wow, I don't do it any more but I used to larp a lot so it's cool to hear you all talk about it in a lovely, thoughtful way. It also spurs me to write an essay of a comment which I can only apologise for. When people comment that they expect larp to be nerds running around in a field (which to be clear is perfectly valid form of larp), imagine you met someone who had never been to the cinema but only heard about it via cultural osmosis. They would think cinema is about superheroes, whereas there are of course many movies about goo and heartbreak involving no punching or super powers. My favourite niche of larp used to be non-verbal ones making strong use of lights and sound played in a theatre space. On "what is to stop people destroying the larp," is that this is a problem you've already encountered as a child, with an older kid who suddenly declares everyone who are the goo is dead and out of the game. IIt gets very tiresome quickly and you probably quickly stopped playing games with them. But also what is to stop you getting on stage and yelling at the characters in the theatre (other than security)? It's just not the done thing. In many ways larp is about hacking these social mechanisms and using them to create art. You are the goo merchant because everyone treats you like a goo merchant and asks you what goo you have for sale. As November said it can really mess with your head, in good and bad ways. On how to get involved, other than looking up relevant Facebook groups near you. My (biased) recommendation is if you can get to London in early January look up The Smoke larp festival. It's lots of short larps in a weekend with no costume or pre-preperation is an easy way to dip your toes in. You can also find larp scripts which you could run if you can convince friends to try. There are web resources like Alexandria DK or various books of scripts. There is also actually something called online larp which you can play without leaving your house which was spurred into life by the pandemic. But I think is less satisfying as a first. Lastly I hope No Gods, No Majors is also now going to involve bullying Riley into a weekend long larp with a female character.

Very nice post about not posting! Mirrors experiences in operations on large model railroads run on period specific paperwork and rules.
