BOUTIQUE + FLEXI Dragon Shoulder Puppet EARLY ACCESS

Hey everyone!

I'm super excited to release the dragon that you've all been asking for since the finger puppet came out-- The shoulder puppet!

Learning more from y'alls feedback of the last puppet, this one has some new improvements! (Which will soon be applied to the finger puppet ASAP as well!)

This guy is SUPER sturdy once assembled with the hinge pins and can take way more of a beating than the old attachment designs.

In addition to that, if you don't want to hassle with assembly at all, this guys has a PRINT IN PLACE version too! So all you have to do is feed the line through his neck and body to bring him to life! Although I'm particularly in love with the larger dragons you can get by utilizing the assembly version!

There are a few different options for however you and your customers want to wear these guys! The dragon harness is included here, which has a flared slot that you can slide into the notch in the bottom of your dragon for a super secure hold!

I've attached a video of how to add holes for magnets in your slicer for anyone who wants to attach them to yourself with magnets instead. And instead of adding the magnet holes myself, this way y'all can add them wherever you'd like, with whatever magnets you have available and without worrying about scaling changing the magnet sizes!

I also think gluing or adhering Velcro on the bottom of this dragon would be another awesome way to attach him to you!

Print recs:
2-3 walls
5-15% infill
No supports
Feel free to size up or down! Tested between 60 and 160% scale (A lot of size variety with this guy which is super fun!)
Print 4 hinge pins with dragon.

I used fishing line and a small bead (a 3D printed version is included if needed) at the end to weave through the head and down the chest, there's a channel at the top of each neck segment to feed the line through.

The harness is a snug fit and depending on what filament you use, may need to scale up 1-4% or so (I.E silks expand more than basic PLA)

Filaments used are Bambu Arctic Whisper Gradient, D3D Black, Amolen Tri red/yellow/blue, Bambu dual green/blue, with additional hand painted details.

I just got 1" silk ribbon from Michael's for mine! Any 1" strap should work :) That's a neat idea! Although I would worry about threading the line through more objects might make the head movement less sensitive with tugging on the line, depending on what angle it was done at. I find that usually the direction I want to have the line resting for puppeting doesn't really align with where the harness sits too. Thanks so much!!

Kirsten McKenzie

Do you have a link to the strap material used for the harness? Also, thoughts on adding a channel to the harness buckle to allow the line to go through it? It appears that the line doesn't have a 'smooth' path around the harness mount... Overall, great job! love this one so far!

Wade Seibert

I had the same issue... I got my small files out and filed out the channel a bit, and also the part on the harness. It now slides on snug

Wade Seibert

im new to 3D printing how much scaling did you do for the big guy ? i want to print him but not sure about the scale amount. thank you for all your cool models.. your work is amazing...

kristy hulsey

I made the dragons different intentionally :) I'll be adding new swappable heads down the line, though. The finger puppet head doesn't have the proper mechanics built into the neck for the puppeting line to go through.

Kirsten McKenzie

Exchangable?*

Muffina

Where is the dragon with the not floppy horns? :( i would like to print this one with the head of the fingerpuppet, or are they exchanga

Muffina

Hahaha yessss that's one of the reasons I made it too xD I'm so glad you like it!

Kirsten McKenzie

Oh my heavens... child me would have sold a kidney for one of these! This is literally going to heal a piece of my inner child! I'm so excited to make one of these!

Kristi Pearce

Does anyone have a link for straps to use or a video. I can not figure these out. I'm am idiot sorry.

Gibbys Gifts

They should all be flat horizontal on the build plate :).

Kirsten McKenzie

hey what orientation do you have the 4 hinge pins to print

Jenna Watkins

Anything I come up with I'll send to Kek for her to incorporate into an update. I won't have much time to devote to this until later this year. Basic mechanism is one used in puppetry - a flexible "spinal" column and lines on each side mimicking the muscle clusters on each side. I've already worked up a prototype using a length of raw filament as the spinal column as a proof of concept that works very nicely. I just have to figure out the mechanism for the spine as an unextruded filament will eventually fail from mechanical stress.

Patrick Henagan

Patrick, I absolutely love that idea as I've been trying to figure out something like that as well. It'd be wonderful to hear what you engineered. :)

Lioness2000

Aw no! Like I mentioned in the print info, some filaments expand more than others so the harness needs scaling sometimes. I would get some clippers and just cut out the triangle part on the harness so you can wiggle it out and then just print the harness a little smaller! :)

Kirsten McKenzie

I printed the print in place and the harness well the harness doesn't slide in and now it's stuck and I can't move it in or out causing me to break part of the wing and it was a 17hr print 😭. Is there an easier way?

Holli Petry

Is there a harness for the print in place model?

Mo50014

Here you go! https://youtu.be/Ue80NzaFUPc

Kirsten McKenzie

Thank you so much for the kind words!! I really appreciate it <3 I'm so happy y'all appreciate it!

Kirsten McKenzie

I agree with everyone about your creativity and attention to detail. I also appreciate how responsive you are to the community and your generosity with tutorials. I have been wondering about placing magnets.

Pcgstuff

You're so welcome! I'm so glad you like him! :)

Kirsten McKenzie

Thank You!!! I've been so excited for this!!

Lioness2000

Awwww for sure. And yesssss totally!

Kirsten McKenzie

Yes definitely! :)

Kirsten McKenzie

Now I'm REALLY starting to miss my printers (we're on holiday). I wonder where you'll take this in the future, maybe a 'flying' dragon?

Sheila Sjeu - Mooi3D

can you do a tutorial video on how to get it to stay on your shoulder and how you get it to work

Deanne Murray

Yeah Bambu will be my next printer lol, far faster

Andrew Sheffield

Awww bummer! Single color print in place is only like 6 hours on my Bambu 🤔

Kirsten McKenzie

Nah sliced and it's a day print on my Neptune or ender.

Andrew Sheffield

Giving it some more thought, it could probably be done with two lines - both high on the neck on each side of where the spine would be. This should allow side to side as well as up and down (pulling both). Simpler for the operator that way. Have acquaintances that do life size puppetry including dragons and that's the basic mechanism they use in their builds except they use push/pull rod systems. The use of flexible pushrods is also how Disney does the mechanisms in the Banshee/Ikran puppets they sell. My background is in robotics/automation and I definitely see the possibility of incorporating some inexpensive electromechanics into this. I'll let you know what I come up with so you can share it to your other patreons.

Patrick Henagan

No problem! It takes me a second to find it when looking at the slicer too xD Thank you so much!! I'm so glad you're enjoying them! ❤️

Kirsten McKenzie

Thank you so much! I couldn't spot it in the slicer at first so I thought maybe there was a missing file or something. Your models are amazing btw and I'm having so much fun with them so thank you!

Laura Russo

It's horizontal across the bottom of the 2nd body segment :) (behind the chest/shoulder piece)

Kirsten McKenzie

Sorry, I'm not seeing a slot in the dragon that the harness slides into

Laura Russo

Yessss! I am going to a music festival at the end of the month and am gonna wear a purple outfit so he’s gonna be my accessory and freak out drunk people!!! 😂

Lauren Jones

There are 4 moving loops so you can choose how many straps to weave through and then the little triangle part on top of the harness slides into the triangle slot on the bottom of the dragon! :)

Kirsten McKenzie

Ahhh Yay! It'll look amazing in that color!! I can't wait to see!

Kirsten McKenzie

I'm dumb and dont understand how the harness works.

Gibbys Gifts

Thank you!!! Ima print him big in Lilac filament🥰 have two rolls arriving tomorrow!!

Lauren Jones

His body segment maxed out my build plate at about 156%!

Kirsten McKenzie

Aww yay, thanks so much!! And we actually experimented with that idea but the proper mechanics for getting that kind of movement was a lot more complicated than expected, so we set it aside for the first release so we can experiment with it in the future lol

Kirsten McKenzie

How large did you scale the black dragon you have on in the first pic?? Love it!!!!

Lauren Jones

Thanks so much!! <3 You could do a small little print in place one lol

Kirsten McKenzie

The hinge pin idea is great. These are awesome. Wish I had time to have one done for tomorrow's craft fair

Andrew Sheffield

LOVE IT! This is a great sculpt and just got bumped up to the top of my print list. One suggestion for a variant to this - make 3 channels so that besides the up and down head motion, you also have left and right.

Patrick Henagan

Yayyy! <3

Kirsten McKenzie

Oooh and I have 2 open printers…time to grab the laptop :)

Angela Noack

Yayyy I hope you love him!

Kirsten McKenzie

Thanks so much!! Definitely shoutout to my husband for thinking of the new joints!

Kirsten McKenzie

I can't wait to make one!!!

Holli Petry

Wow!

Kuu Wolf

These are amazing!!!! Those joints look fantastic

The Cheeky Geek

Thank you so much!! Shout out to my husband for helping come up with those and the new hinge assembly xD They're much sturdier and scale way better! You're so welcome! I'm so glad you like it <3

Kirsten McKenzie

Omg you're RIGHT! <3

Kirsten McKenzie

The neck joints look so good!!! Thank you for consistently bringing us such high quality work!! ❤️

Kristi Pearce

I certainly will! I haven't been able to wear my finger puppet much at events because I need my hands. I was thinking of mounting him to much shoulder somehow. But this is even better!

Magic Storm Art

It's just like Gem in DragonLight!!!! My kids are going to love this!

Brianna Nash

Yayyyy I hope you enjoy em!

Kirsten McKenzie

Aww thank you so much!! <3

Kirsten McKenzie

Shut the front door 😮 I'm so excited for this

Magic Storm Art

The level of thought and detail behind these is amazing!!!
