Truss the Process (Fixed)

This week, we take a look at the final two candidates for Leader of the Conservative Party, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak. In many ways this can be seen as a showdown between two extremely distinct posting schools, and we can learn a great deal by observing how these two relate to Online.

From Liz's suggestion to create a second internet for kids, to Rishi's increasingly desperate and poorly-thought-out pledges to close Mandarin language schools, this is one for the ages.

I think, with regards to how the ideological base of the highly-online right deals with the intersection (if you will) between its hate of feminism and its hate of trans people, you're missing a critical part. Using the language or framing of "wokeness" to attack groups or people who the online-right hate is a particularly visceral source of spiteful glee for them. Using the excuse of feminism to harm trans people does three jobs at once for them: it harms trans people directly, it delegitimizes feminism within the right's perception of its (feminism's) framework, and, most importantly, libs will cry super-hard at the first two. It's a 3-for-1 bargain, which is the sort of go-getter behavior that will help little Allegra make up for her missing Mandarin lessons. As distasteful as restating lib Twitter's mantra is, they aren't wrong that the cruelty, in and of itself, is the point.

Ronald Regan and his Chief of Intelligence Albert Stubblebine had some pretty wacky beliefs too. Regan consulted a Hollywood medium before making any serious policy decision. Stubblebine fully believed he was in a psychic war with General Noriega (Noriega thought so as well, to be fair), that he could walk through walls if he believed hard enough, founded a psychic branch of the CIA whose entire job was to wait for premonitions and that he could train soldiers to stop a goat's heart just by staring at it.
