This celestial spectacle takes place from July 17th to September 1st, peaking spectacularly on August 11th, 12th, and 13th. While visible around the globe, the show is most brilliant in the Northern Hemisphere.

The Perseid meteor shower is one of the most well-known and spectacular meteor showers of the year. It's an annual event that occurs when Earth passes through the trail of debris left behind by Comet Swift–Tuttle.

Here are some key facts about the Perseid meteor shower:

• Origin: The meteors you see are not stars, but tiny particles of dust and rock—most no larger than a grain of sand—that were shed by Comet Swift-Tuttle.

• The "Shooting Stars": As these tiny particles enter Earth's atmosphere at high speeds (around 130,000 mph), they heat up and burn, creating the brilliant streaks of light we call "shooting stars."

• Timing: The Perseids are active from mid-July to late August, with a peak of activity in mid-August. During the peak, under ideal conditions, you might see as many as 50 to 100 meteors per hour.

• Name: The shower gets its name from the constellation Perseus, as the meteors appear to radiate from a point within that constellation in the night sky.

• Best Viewing: The Perseids are best viewed from the Northern Hemisphere, especially in the pre-dawn hours. To get the best view, it's recommended to find a dark location away from city lights.

• Peak Viewing: The shower is expected to be at its best during the late-night hours of August 12th and the pre-dawn hours of August 13th. This is when Earth passes through the densest part of the comet's debris trail.

• Moonlight Interference: Unfortunately, the viewing conditions for the 2025 Perseids will be somewhat challenged by a bright, waning gibbous moon. The moon will be about 84% full during the peak, and its light will likely wash out many of the fainter meteors.

• Still Worth Watching: Despite the bright moon, you may still be able to see some of the brighter meteors, including fireballs, which are larger and more brilliant.

• How to Watch: To maximize your chances of seeing meteors, you should:

  • Find a location as far away from city lights as possible.

  • Let your eyes adjust to the darkness for at least 30 minutes.

  • Lie back and look up at a wide view of the sky, rather than focusing on a single spot. The meteors can appear anywhere.

  • The Perseids appear to radiate from the constellation Perseus, so looking in that general direction (in the northeast sky) can be helpful, but you don't need to stare directly at it.
