STORM-02

Just about thirty minutes after that last post, Storm’s social feed pushed a new image across every feed in the region: the captured soldier known online as Storm, bound and gagged. He had been expertly and thoroughly tied to a sturdy wooden chair; several ARS men worked to rope him up. His wrists were crossed, lashed together, and secured to the back bar of the chair so he couldn’t move his arms. His upper torso was carefully roped to the chair’s back in multiple passes, crisscrossing his chest until his body seemed almost one with the wood. His waist and upper legs were tightly bound as well. His legs were bent and his ankles forced back and lashed to the chair’s rear legs. He couldn’t move at all, any motion caused discomfort and simply shifted the pressure to another part of his body. Satisfied that Storm posed no further threat, one of the captors shoved Storm’s glove into his mouth and taped it thoroughly over his mouth and around his head several times. He had never trained for this. He had never been this helpless before.

The message below the picture was stark:

“Anyone else in the Kantilla region, surrender now or suffer the same fate!”

Within minutes the post spread through his network of followers, including his unit members. The image did exactly what the ARS intended it turned fear into pressure.

He remembered the moment right before it all unraveled: the rattle of the truck, the smell of dust, the phone still warm in his hand from the last post he’d made. He thought the upload would be gone in seconds, swallowed by the noise of the net. Instead, it became a beacon.

When the ambush hit there was no cinematic firefight, just noise and confusion. It was supposed to be an easy, unannounced sweep, but somehow the ARS had been expecting them. Someone shouted his call sign. A flash, a fall, the weight of gravel. His unit scattered to take cover in different directions; it wasn’t supposed to go down like this. He couldn’t see the rest of them anymore, only distant shouting and code from all around. He needed to retreat; bullets ricocheted off the ground and the walls.

He saw ruined buildings nearby and ran toward them, then knelt behind a chunk of cover to catch his breath. He scanned for better concealment and, a few seconds later, decided to make a run for it. As he turned the corner, a pair of ARS militants waited twenty feet away, rifles already trained on him. He started to raise his weapon, but shots exploded around him, deafening and throwing up a choking cloud of dust.

Voices rose all around him, shouting, “Don’t do it!” “Drop it!” “Drop your weapon!”

Surrounded and disoriented, he knew he had no chance of surviving the encounter without making a hard decision. He slowly set his rifle down and raised his hands. ARS men grabbed him, shoved a bag over his head, patted him down, and stripped him of his handgun and knife. They dragged him to the back of the ruined building and loaded him into an ATV with his hands over his head. After a few minutes of a super-bumpy ride, the ATV stopped. They unloaded him, removed the bag, and forced him to kneel. He was questioned briefly while his gear and equipment were confiscated. He felt powerless without them.

One man grabbed the yellow zip tie from his plate carrier and secured his wrists in front of him. He was then forced toward a truck waiting nearby, but before they loaded him, they made him record a short video naming himself and his unit and apologizing for being there. He didn’t know what the video was for until they told him later during the truck ride.

A little later, under a dim light, he sat tied up and gagged while a camera lens stared back. Every word he’d posted replayed in his head, taunting him: They won’t stand a chance… We’ll fuck them up… Those ARS losers will be wearing these zip ties…

Now he was the message. He realized the ARS didn’t need to do anything more to win; all they had to do was show that the man behind the bravado was just a man, frightened, exposed, and captured.
