Creator Blog #25 - When is the best time to do anything?

There was a post on Reddit once that said it makes no difference if a person was an early worm or night owl. You gotta do what works for you. As Dan Pink would say, a person is are either a Lark or an Owl. Either way, everyone shares the same energy cycle. You can start out your day at 5am or 5pm, the cycle is still the same.

What the book “When” by Dan Pink has taught me is that there is a certain cycle that we all experience sequentially. It’s a three-phase cycle. Upon starting the day, we ramp up to an energetic phase (for me it’s 10am), lulls to a lazy pace (right after lunch), then ramps up again to a “different kind” of energetic phase (early evening).

If you don’t want to read the book, here’s a talk he did at Google: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUhnzxrNpCc

So how do you take advantage of this cycle? For me I use the mornings to do the most difficult tasks of the day leveraging my highest energy. This is usually the gritty and technical work of creating graphics and videos. During the lull of the day, I use that for passive tasks like organizing and checking messages and emails. And in the evening comes the second wind which is “different” because (according to the book and also based on my personal observation) this is the best time to think and be creative. So I use the later part of the day to plan, brainstorm, and generate ideas.
