NYC Blog #8 - Community Fridges

What I love about NYC is the sense of community the city fosters. There are tons of government programs to help those that need social services (from health care to parenting classes to handling debt). But it’s not just the government that extends care. The community itself has many initiatives, such as community fridges.

Community fridges are just that. A fridge where you can put food in and someone who needs food can take it. And what makes these so New York is that each fridge is themed by it’s location. A fridge in the the Lower East Side can be all vegan while a fridge in Astoria is completely in Spanish. I’ve started collecting photos of these fridges as I find them (photo above).

Hopefully those that raid these actually need the food.

Yet another good mention. I knew about these from another YT’er that did night runs after the stores closed to add fresh stuff to them. Sad thing is they get vandalized and raided.
