On Video Games and DID

http://didcomics.com/wp-content/uploads/test/index.html

Trust me, it's not a virus. That would be a mean thing to do to someone who supports me.

Before you click that link...

Up until now, i've sort've only been sharing upcoming stuff about V the Vampire Vigilante (which is still my top priority, until i've finished the main arc, which i hope is going to be worth it). But today i plan on showing you something a little different.

I don't know how upcoming this is. I may end up sharing with my broader deviantArt watchers (later). Or i may never bring it up again. But as a patron, i thought you might want to have a glimpse behind the curtains at some of my ideas in the bank. Maybe you can give me your opinions on it, too.

Because, you see, I'm sort've lost on this one.

The contents of that link, short though it is, are the result of many months of work. But i ended up shelving it when it wasn't turning out how i wanted. I was already busy with my job, Marisu and, at the time, was planning to release V soon. And i just didn't feel like the effort i was putting into this would be worth it.

Part of me still thinks it's not worth it.

But now i see other DID artists coming up with similar ideas... I won't lie, it makes me a tad jealous to think someone would leap-frog me on an idea i had years ago (but not the time or necessary help required to realize it).

So i thought - why not share it anyway?

But then, would i really be willing to put the work in necessary to finish it?

Truth is, i've grown to dislike the techstack (flash). And if i were to try my hand at video games again, i'd make a 'real' game, with a real programming language.

So where does that leave this?

Should i come back to it at some point? I don't truly intend to feature complete it.

Would people be interested in 'playing' a light-weight, feature incomplete DID-parody of Ace Attorney visual novel without saving or even a complicated plot?

I don't know...

But i do know this'll never be what i originally intended it to be - a full-fledged Ace Attorney style case, with saving and plot twists and, of course... Damsels in Distress.

Thanks for the reply! Sorry i didn't respond earlier. Just been crazy busy (this time of year, ya know). I do think i'll come back to the game idea. But after i finish the V comics. It'll be a substantial amount of work and i want it to be invested properly. In the meantime, maybe i could release (with this crappy broken engine) a proof-of-concept. Or something. As to the library, renpy looks interesting. But i'm thinking a little more hardcore, like libGDX. It's more a framework than a fully realized engine, but it gives a little more control to the creator to do what they'd like. Besides, i have a few ideas i'd like to code up. Maybe even a "point and click" puzzle slash adventure game. I dunno. Maybe i'm more ambitious than i should be.

Dude that’s awesome! I think anyone who makes DID art ultimately ends up thinking about making a game at some point. I Know it’s a dream I’m currently chasing. I tried RPG maker MV for a little while (and am still messing around with it…) but what I really want is to make an action DID game with GameMaker (I.e a real game) - the new version (GameMaker 2) of which will be out for Mac so I can finally use it properly! Games are just the perfect medium for DID, they allow for many multiple scenarios depending on player choice, they make tying people up feel more satisfying and personal; and best of all, games punish failure - which in DID games means, well, DID! Only problem is games are a shit ton of work, learning and time… Even something like RPG maker with no coding needed and ready made sprites and assets takes a lot of tedious work. But I think in the end it would probably be worth it, because of all the advantages mentioned before. I think the idea of an Ace parody DID game would be awesome! It’s certainly a fitting franchise! I see your dilemma though… Do you pour precious time into a project you know won’t turn out quite as you want, or do you just forget it, write off the time spent working on it and move on to other things? It’s a tough choice. All I can say is I would love to play this game, even if it is just a short little adventure without many features or saving, and I would guess other people would too. The interactivity of a DID game, even just clicking dialogue boxes, is something special and even in that short gameplay in the link, seeing Marisu and Agent Green animated and interacting with one another was very cool to see! I’m obviously a little biased since I wouldn’t be the one who’d have to sit down and spend ages actually making it, but I think that even a short game could be worth the effort, just for the fun of being able to actually play as Marisu and for all the cool DID scenes an Ace game presents. If you don’t want to sink too much time into the project you could just make a short little game with some features and then offer it as maybe a new perk for Patreons, then at least you can get compensated for your time and make a more complicated game in the future. I understand your desire to make a proper DID Ace game before someone else inevitably makes one, you could if you wanted just use this game as like a test, see if people are interested in the idea and if so then in the future you could make a more complicated one in a different engine. If you do try a different engine in the future, I’ve heard Ren’Py - <a href="https://www.renpy.org" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.renpy.org</a> - is a good (and free) visual novel engine (HeartGear is currently using it for some of her stuff) while GameMaker is a solid and simple (enough) standard engine for making non-3d games. Hope this was of some help!
