Pacers Player Previews: Haliburton, McConnell, Nembhard

Talking into a microphone about the basketball played by the Indiana Pacers

By: Caitlin Cooper I @C2_Cooper

As the saying goes, all good things must eventually come to an end. Of course, with this being the final player preview podcast, that also means that training camp is only just beginning. At any rate, today's episode with Tony East from Locked on Pacers covers the point guard position, looking ahead at what's to come for Tyrese Haliburton, T.J. McConnell, and Andrew Nembhard.

Per usual, here's what format guided our conversation:

Does Haliburton still have more to give as a scorer? How much does that matter relative to his defense? Who will be the back-up point guard, T.J. McConnell or Andrew Nembhard? We get into all of that and much more. Enjoy and thanks for following along with the series!

Points per game isn't super meaningful to me in this context.

I'm not concerned by the turnovers in Summer League. Not very many of them were live-ball and Haliburton is unique in that he's an adventurous playmaker who also manages to minimize turnovers. You accept higher turnover rates from guys who can make advanced reads.

P.S. TJ should play. He is way too good to be the third point. Play him or trade him for long range assets. Also, I love Nembhard and I loved him in summer league….but remember all of those turnovers.

Fantastic podcast. Your discussion of the line for Tyrese is really about the fact that a guy averaging 20 and 10 might well be playing better and helping his team more than a guy averaging 27 and 10. Efficient shooting and protecting the ball (and stealing it) are very important but many fans don’t see it.
