patreon changes

so, i'm moving across the country next month and that's giving me a chance to reassess some stuff.

a month or two ago i actually did the math and wrote out how much all this gamedev stuff + writing was 'worth' if i gave myself a moderate professional rate, and it was pretty disheartening looking between the, like, oh okay 'the new hive' is ~300k words, and all the hell game content is ~200k words, and even in a fairly entry-level professional rate that's something in the range of $30k-$60k, and that's not even factoring the cost of coding everything. and like obviously i'm not really expecting that kind of wage, but it's pretty disheartening to calculate that up and compare it to the total overall earnings from the patreon.

so, anyway, i'm gonna change around how the patreon works in some capacity. that might be turning the patreon into a 'tips jar' kinda thing, or collapse all the tiers into a single "see stuff" one, so i can try to focus on actually doing the things i like to do without worry so much about obligations or w/e. in any case, i'm gonna step back from trying to actually run this like a subscription service, since i was never really very good at that.

i'm gonna keep writing and working on games and the like, because that is something i enjoy doing, but it's probably past time that i accepted that this patreon has mostly been an exercise in taking something i liked doing and turning it into the world's worst-paying job.

i'll suspend the patreon for next month but then after that i'll just let it go and whatever i post i'll post. i might fold that into my sometimes-biweekly code posts over on my blog; who knows.
