2025-03-07 17:49:04 +0000 UTCThe Last Jedi is 1/3 brilliant & 2/3 absolutely garbage. But funnily enough, part of why I am so hostile to that film is because I am so sympathetic to your points here. One of the (many) reasons why I (mostly) loathe TLJ is actually because of how individualized/focused on characters rather than on systems it is. The sequel trilogy gives us nothing about the political state of the galaxy--what was the New Republic & it's relationship to the First Order & the Resistance? Is the First Order larger than the New Republic or of equivalent size or is it dramatically smaller? Neither The Force Awakens nor the TLJ tell us and this is a BIG problem. In a galaxy of trillions, the only military victory for the First Order was the destruction of the one single star system that contained the seat of the New Republic government and then First Order paid the price for that terrorist attack with the elimination of Starkiller Base. If North Korea or China destroyed Washington DC & the area immediately surrounding that would be a devastating blow, but the US would still be capable of crushing North Korea militarily & we would still have a good shot at defeating China. The idea of a democratic republic falling into dictatorship is as old the reactionary dictatorship of Sulla in Rome & the prequels, for all of their immense flaws, are saying something about how oligarchic corruption & war can lead to fascist dictatorship & the original trilogy is about the moral necessity & heroism underdogs rebelling against such a system--major kudos for Lucas explicitly telling people he envisioned the rebels as analogues to the Viet Cong. But the political order post revolutionary toppling of the Empire is totally unknown. To steal a pun made by DonLasagna, Disney StarWars was about stars (heroes) without any attention to the wars (political systems) & so we merely have aesthetics without any commentary with The Rise of Skywalker being the absolutely apogee of this--it's so utterly empty of anything it's not even worth talking about. If you want "Keep your politics out of my Star Wars! I want want amazing super-powered heroes who can defeat any odds!" you could not possibly ask for better films than the Disney StarWars sequel trilogy. Which is why I hate it. I know you talk about many, many other features besides TLJ in this video, but I wanted to comment about it here because my own dislike of that film actually stems from reasons you have though I am using them somewhat differently & I just felt like writing them down.

As I am a patreon supporter it's not 100 percent true. But I will say seeing Gary from Nerdrotic (Also, I have a funny story, not funny HAHA just more... huh? Interesting.) Who used to be a close friend before he relapsed and cast himself as the victim of a very bad situation of his own making.

I think the real reason why that movie didn't do well. Is not really because it tried to hide it was musical. No I don't think so. I think the real reason. Is that It was a narrative that allot of people. The right and left. That is mentioned in this video. They don't want to tackle at the moment. Good. I'm glad we got a different Harley Quinn. And not something recycled.
