Jumpgate #133 - Final Thoughts

Whelp, Jumpgate is coming in for a final docking. Our last episode is here, and Vera and I are closing things out by reminiscing about our favorite Babylon 5 moments—the highs, the heartbreaks, and of course, the sheer brilliance of G’Kar. Watching Babylon 5 in this moment, as we see the world tilt toward the very dangers the show warned about, has been… let’s say extremely timely. It’s not a perfect series, and we talk about that too, but it’s a hell of a great one. And getting to share this journey with Vera has been an absolute joy, especially considering this was one of my favorite series growing up. But don’t touch that dial—because next week, we’re launching FRAK THIS PODCAST, diving into another show that I loved growing up - the reimagined Battlestar Galactica. Hopefully, this one won’t feel too relevant to current events. (cries in Cylon uprising) . Thank you all for being part of the Jumpgate adventure.

I think Severed Dreams is my #1 episode of the show. Incidentally, it is also almost exactly half way through the entire series. I don't think any media has so effectively balanced both the necessity, the pain, and the tragedy of this type of rebellion. And the cost of war, which is a recurring theme that on the whole B5 handles excellently. But this one episode is the pivot on which the entire show turns, and I cannot get over how it juxtaposes the terror, the triumph, and the tragedy. The build-up is tense, the battle is epic and dramatic, and the loss is palpable. And holy cow [spoilers], Delenn's entrance at the end is the single most iconic rescue since the Ride of the Rohirrim. "Only one human has survived battle with a Minbari fleet. He is behind me. You are in front of me. If you value your lives, be somewhere else."

I'm excited to hear that you & Vera will be doing BSG next!! Here I was going to be a bit sad about losing Jessie & Vera talking intelligently about a great sci-fi and now I learn that it's going to continue. Yay!! BSG is such an interesting beast. I think starts off INCREDIBLY strongly but ultimate it ends VERY poorly (not just the finale but the whole final season I have pretty dim view of). Honestly, it used to be my go to example of one of the worst tv series endings of all time of a show that used to be of the highest quality. But then season 7 &, even more so, season 8 of Game of Thrones which were so utterly bad that I actually was finally able to see some merit in the ending of BSG. But despite the very bad ending of BSG, the brilliance of the Admiral Cain trilogy in season 2 or wonderful tension & character writing of "33" or "Hand of God" in season 1 are sooo good. But I'm starting to get wordy. Thank you & Vera for a wonderful B5 journey & I am looking forward to listening to you two talk about BSG.
