Jumpgate #132 – The Road Home

Well, folks, we’ve officially reached the latest (and possibly last?) Babylon 5 release on the Jumpgate podcast—The Road Home, the recent animated movie. It’s been a wild journey through the universe of B5, and this film takes us on one final (multiversal) ride through some of its greatest hits. Does it capture that old Babylon 5 magic? Or does it leave us adrift in the multiverse?

What I don’t get is, what the hell is wrong with the Floyd County Toon boom style animation like in Archer and Hit Monkey? It’s solid, cost effective, and incredibly flexible. As for B5 reboot, ahm……JMS was something in the 90’s. But he hasn’t evolved with the storytelling state of the art. As time goes on he feels more and more like a 90’s Comic Book writer. It was less noticeable in The 90’s, and when he sits down and writes a BIG quarter page monologue word balloon, it’s transcendent, particularly when performed by an excellent talent. (all of Andreas K. and Peter J.) But, he’s too “I have to do it all myself” to really meet visual story telling where it is now.

This podcast series has been the perfect accompaniment to my revisitation of Babylon 5 in 2025 and a boon to me attempting to retain any sanity in this world. Vera and Jessie remain a winning combination that makes any geek property conversation more interesting.

I forgot which the episode, but after B5 seceded from the Earth Alliance there was one where we got introduced to a snarky station computer AI.

My impression of the dumb snarky computer joke is that I would have gotten it if the computer had sounded like Harlan Ellison. Granted, that would again have led us to ask who this movie was for, but it would have at least been a joke about them keeping the snarky Harlan Ellison AI in that timeline.
