UNCENSORED - The Racist Cisgender Nonsense of Emilia Perez

Its finally here! This is a big one and I think it contains some of the best writing I've ever done at the end. I tried to make it a fun one, but ultimately there's a lot to be angry about with this one, so I hope you all enjoy <3 <3

UNCENSORED - The Racist Cisgender Nonsense of Emilia Perez

Comments

This movie seems full of narrative that we are broken, psychotic perhaps, prone to violence and irrational in the intense desire to transition. And of course the m2f character is hyper masculine. How many negative cultural tropes can they throw in here? Growing boobs but with a full beard? Not exactly common for someone seeking medical transition. Pretending it is just about body change? Emilia would not get past any rational gate keepers. That this became so nominated for Oscars is a very bad sign.

I know Bob can be a little sanctimonious and “Thinkers Good, Believers Bad” doesn’t really work if you try to use it as a framework to analyse history on any deeper level than the superficial, but I’ve always appreciated how genuinely respectful he is towards issues like this.

I was so confused when Zoe won the Oscar for “best supporting actress,” because, after watching Jessie’s video (and not having watched Emilia), it sounded like Rita was the main character. I was also confused when her emotional speech talks about women, Dominican women, and Hispanic women, but didn’t even mention the trans community. She won this award for a role of being a fervent ally, but totally skips out on that in real life. I didn’t see Karla Sophia Gascon in the Oscars broadcast at all, and I get that she’s been cancelled and seems to be very problematic. But for a movie supposedly about trans issues, they do a great job of capitalizing on the trans community and then totally erasing any ties to it. It just goes to show that the movie and people behind it were not genuinely interested in learning about or supporting the trans community at all. I’m baffled that it got so many nominations, but glad at least that it didn’t get the biggest awards. Also, thank you for this video. You make so many good points and do an amazing job of tying it into the bigger picture at the end.

As an american, I've never known anyone to pronounce it fox so I assume it was intentional

Ariella

So , there Is a movie from Oaxaca, México that i havent seen It in long time. It's about a muxe, a trans woman from a región of Oaxaca that Is investigating the murder of a friend. The name Is Carmín Tropical.

Thank you very much for putting into words why this movie made my skin crawl, and giving me examples I didn’t even consider offensive. Your concise breakdown is much appreciated. Thank you

John Baird

I finally finished this one. Woof. Happily I don't have to see the movie to witness all the terribleness :) Out of curiosity, as a Canadian (anglophone) I tend to wince when French words get mutilated. Was the mispronunciation of "faux" as "fox" a deliberate dis to the French director not bothering to get Spanish correct or is this a recent Americanism that has developed (I'm old). If the former, highly deserved, if the latter, oh well, I guess I'll have to get used to it.

Your review was so amazing to listen to! Thank you for making this! Happy to support you!

One consolation is that this movie has been out for months and so far has only made back half of it's budget. It cost 26 million dollars (25 mil Euros) to make but has only made 13 mi at the box office.

Doctor Babylon

So happy to support you and your incredible work.

the weaponization of a copyright strike is insane and cruel, and netflix should really be ashamed. I'm happy to go through a few extra hoops to give a proper donation though!

Eirik Sundby

I've been following you for a while but had not joined your Patreon untill now. I really want to support you. Thanks for the video, as a Mexican it feels good to see somebody else found this movie offensive, because for months, the discourse was that we were just snowflakes with a chip on our shoulders.

Really liked this video a lot (including your praise for I Saw the TV Glow, which has stuck in my brain for almost a year now and made me cry, which basically never happens with movies - srsly, SO good). When I saw Emilia Perez, it was so disappointing on every possible level (all I knew when I went to the theater was "musical about a woman crime lord", who I assumed was played by Zoe Saldana). The longer it went on, the more I thought oh no, this is deffffinitely doing some transphobic crap. Thanks for doing such a deep dive on it! Your take added a lot more detail and texture to my perception.

First breakdown of this movie I watched was from creator Salem Tovar and she has a while bit about the problematic accents, maybe you'll find that interesting too.

That last bit actually made me cry and almost ashamed for being a straight female cis. I wish I could support more but I found out last week I'm not getting a permanent contract at work, even when they promised. Company fired loads of peeps, rather invest in AI. So that ship has sailed, I hope it turns out to be the tAItanic. If I find something new that allows my budget to be stretched a bit more, I'll look for an upgrade. Maybe you could do that Coffee thing as well, not sure if that's any good but I've seen it at other creators and it allows viewers to do one time donations. I can understand that a monthly subscription might be too much for some, but they could be willing to chip in a buck or so once a while...

Lam Zwerfpaard

Your little insert in this video on YouTube urging folks to subscribe to your Patreon prompted me to subscribe here. Kudos on this amazing review of this movie!

As a latina, i am so greatfull of this video, i haven't seen that many videos about the issues in this movie in the english side of youtube and i'm glad one of my favourite creators did one. Also, if you would like to help the people who made the parodie of Emilia Perez, the director said that Johanne Sacreblue is gonna have an official movie release in Mexico and started a new crowdfund for making now a full movie, it would be really helpfull if you shared their gofundme.

Shireri

I've been one of your supporters for three years (I think? maybe more?) now. And your craft has evolved by leaps and bounds. Truly and from my heart Jessie. It has been a privilege to witness the birth of such a talented film creator. Your voice and your vision are so strong. I appreciate all that you do.

SuperDezzy

Hrm, for all the talk for so long I hadn't heard it was a musical, never mind so much of a cringe one. (Though I suppose the doctor was arranging the surgery cause that's what Emilia hired her to do for secrecy's sake) But, ye Gods, this seems atrocious all around.

OliveD

👏👏👏👏 I just finished watching this and OMG... I mean the entire analysis was great, but the last segment in this video was just... it was really... IDK, it was oddly relieving? You cogently said a whole lot that's been swirling around in my head as I've grown increasingly frustrated, trying to communicate with friends and family to express the need to get organized and active, and being mostly met with apathy, doomerism, and even superciliousness. It's been really draining to contend with, tbh, but then watching the last segment in your video, it was like "YES! OMG Y'ALL! WHAT SHE'S SAYING!!!" Ha I wonder if any of them will watch this with me now. 😁

Erica Bearica

That Boy Scout pic took me out 😭

Abi Hunter

Thank god you watched it so I don’t have to

Abi Hunter

Amazing work Jessie! Finally had the time to watch the whole thing. I am happy to have been of assistance in this video, it's one of your best ones. Very punk ending!

Quetzal

I already didn't want to watch this movie, but YIKES. Jessie, I wouldn't have made it through the video if you weren't such an adorable nerd throughout. Your "jump scare", in particular, made me giggle. I genuinely hope the silliness made this video less unpleasant to make. <3

Becky Sparks

Powerful piece. My housemate hadn’t heard of Emilia Perez. I gave her the elevator pitch version and she just looked at me and said “Did Trump write this?”

Taigan

Nearing the end, and honestly, I don't think I've seen a movie that made me this fucking sick and angry since Superbad... and I haven't even seen it. I know that I should watch this, but no... no, I'm not. Sorry for the various comments but this is a good review about a horrible movie.

Jamie

Hollywood loves trauma porn stories that reinforce how tragic the default group imagines marginalized people's existence to be. I can't help but think of that stupid Whale movie. It's always the same tune on different instruments

Sara Ezzat

OK, watched some more, hour and 15 minutes in, and sweet lord, am I ever glad that the ScarJo biopic about the Chicago trans gangster crashed and burned. Like, this movie is just trash... Also, the only person to ever run boobily down the stairs was, in all fairness, Dolly Parton in The Wildest Little Whorehouse in Texas.

Jamie

Love Vera's commentary after reading a line. HAHAHAHA!

FireMermaid

Watching this bit by bit, and the fucking deception of Emilia is just... fucking hell. All the other stuff was terrible, but that bit got me... Oh, and the pro-Israeli sentiment too. Fuck, there's a lot of garbage in this movie and I'm only 50 minutes into your review.

Jamie

I love your videos!

May

I’m doing the SpongeBob bouncing up and down ohboyohboyohboy

HAUNTER

I’ll have to watch this later, but I wanted to share what one reviewer (MovieBob) did. [shows clip from the movie showing the sex change clinic musical scene] [cut to clip of the Simpsons] Lisa: [angrily] Mom! Make dad tell the story right! Marge: [sadly] That’s what really happened. Lisa: …..oh.

Taigan

Ooooh this is a loooong one and I will enjoy every pinche segundo

Quetzal

I can’t help but chuckle that you keep in my rants when you give me infuriating lines to read. Bless you for going this deep. Goodness knows I didn’t have the strength.

Vera Wylde

Third edit… I gave you more money. 💰

Iron

over two hours? I bet this took so much work! Can't wait to watch! Edit: that ending...damn. All I can say is I feel and share your rage, and you are exactly right to be so critical of the movie given how it doubles down on harmful stereotypes about trans women, and how that is indicative of the world's shift towards fascism overall. It's a scary time for sure, I'm so glad we have voices like yours to highlight these issues so that those who are not thinking so much about these things can see how important they are.

Cleo McKeever

Second edit: That was so good and important. Thank you for making that. This excellent review. Thank you. Edit: I’m really surprised this film got any attention at all. It’s shot really poorly and edited in just shot-reverse-shot for everything. The music and lyrics are very High School Musical. Barsocchini would be closer to Trier and Efron over Bjork. Jesus wept. What a miserable watch. Thanks for reviewing it. I’m really looking forward to this. As a fan of Lars Von Trier and Bjork, I want to see how this movie fails next to Trier’s realism in musicals!

Iron

I didn't expect a shoutout to my favorite video game two minutes in the video but I for one am living for it thank you jessie <3 Edit: okay I've finished the video now and the ending was so meaningful and literally made me cry; thank you so much for it. I've also upgraded my patreon tier, I hope that things get better financially for you! And thanks again for making all the amazing work you do

Ariella

Thank you Jessie for everything ❤️ I sent you a private message with some personal things if you have the time, if you don't I just wanted to briefly say thank you 💕

Gabriela Gatto

Was simultaneously delightful and painful to work on this one lmao

Miranda Ketita

Yup. Longer than the movie itself. I looked it up. Not gonna actually WATCH that film.
