THE CISGENDER NONSENSE OF EMILIA PEREZ script

Hey all,

If you haven’t seen me talk abou

THE CISGENDER NONSENSE OF EMILIA PEREZ script

Comments

How hard woulddd it have been just to have Emilia ultimately sacrifice herself to szve some children from the cartel bosses with whom she used to pal around? How hard would it have been to have her truly show how much she's changed by genuinely helping to bring down the terror of the cartels rather thaan just dying in a wholly unrelated and random accidents?

John Vinals

Came back for another read

Jeni

What a great idea. As they say, take my money!!!

3 Muppets In a Trench Coat

Oof wow, I had heard this movie was getting some criticism about the Mexican aspects so I was mildly surprised when I saw it had won some awards. I didn't actually know what it was about so i looked it up and saw it was about a trans character, the description actually sounded like it could be interesting, but after reading this script I think it's safe to say i'm gonna pass on this one.

Nathan Fraughton

Please feel free to, I’d be honored!

Sylvie

That’s a really amazing point Sylvie! Are you cool if I add this idea to the script and thank you for mentioning it?

Jessie Earl

One of the (many) things I despise about stories like this is how they try to rob us of our capacity for violence. Us being women generally but trans women specifically. I’m not a huge fan of violence for its own sake, certainly not the domestic violence or cartel violence portrayed by this movie, but I do believe there’s such a thing as liberatory violence. Sometimes you need to punch a fascist, or a terf, or a Cardassian occupier. Sometimes you need more than a forceful no against an unjust system, or a shitty person. And these stories dare to tell us that that violence is for men only. Women can be its victims, they tell us, but never its wielders. And trans women get it extra, cause if we ever do fight back, we’re told that it proves our identities invalid. Fuck that. Let the forces of patriarchy and empire and capitalism tremble at the thought of us. We’ve long been at the vanguard of the queer movement, and that’s not changing, no matter who says otherwise.

Sylvie

Personally I believe Jessie can just report on how Spanish speaking people feel about it. Hollywood has done this forever, in this case the movie is French, but nevermind, it's always disrespectful. Like how Mission: Impossible 2 makes Spanish people burn virgins during the San Fermines in Seville, it's totally ridiculous. It can be funny (everyone was laughing at M:I 2 when I watched it in the cinema) but every Mexican I know is annoyed at this because it's selling a Mexican culture/experience to the rest of the world. You don't need to be latino to observe this, the same way you didn't need to be Japanese to see how "Memoirs of a Geisha" looks like a parody, you don't need to be Argentinian to know X-Men First Class completely makes up how Villa Gessel looks. The real place is by the sea, not in the mountains. Also, the real place is ugly as fuck, hahaha. Anyway, it's a bit tiring, and quite normalized in American cinema.

Quetzal

This sounds like somehow a mash up of Narcos and Transparent, but only the ugly parts. If this had been done by a queer Mexican person as a comedy, say the drag queen Valentina, it would have been so camp and funny; imagine if John Waters jumped in with Valentina. Such wasted opportunities.

Sorry to butt in, but I wanted to say something not in response to Quetzal, but in general because I've seen some commenters in videos being extra ugly to Jessie: I agree with Jessie that it's not her place to go over the accent part. Not because like it's prohibited to talk about other people's issues, it's just like it's not Jessie's lived experience and there's plenty going on in other aspects. Like I would expect the accent issue to be covered by Alexander Avila or Elliot Sang, if they talked about the same movie, since they do similar analysis to Jessie and are both Latino. Like nothing wrong about what y'all are mentioning here about quotes and ways to add to the video. I just wanted to pitch in that it's okay to cover some things and not others, as an audience member who is Latinx/Hispanic, born and raised south of the border; like it's great to go the extra mile 🙌🏽, but if it wasn't covered I would understand that Jessie is coming from a good place. Also sorry for the parasociality. Okay bye.

Kai Lewen

If you want I can also ask for a Mexican perspective, I have plenty of Mexican friends. One is trans and she hated this movie, double hated it, because she said it's bad trans rep, bad Mexican rep, double whammy.

Quetzal

Pretty please! Just don't quote the part where I say "gringo", it's uncouth! A slur from oppressed to a oppressor ain't as bad, but it's still a slur. If when you quote me you mention my English channel Quetzal at the Diner it would be very nice, heh, it's not exactly soaring atm. But funny thing, my video "Howl" was also censored over non-existant "erotic content", I don't know if Youtube just hates queer culture or it's like this with everyone. Thanks! Eager to watch the review!

Quetzal

Actually, let me be more clear and concise: whenever I see this, I understand how blackface looks to a black person. It's almost the same thing, just without the make up.

Quetzal

Yeah! I mention that a tad but it’s not my place to get into it too deeply, but could I actually quote you here and shout you out on the video?

Jessie Earl

Oi! Haven't read the whole thing, I'll wait for the video, but just in case you missed it, as a Spanish speaker, Selena Gomez's accent is unbearable. I can hardly understand her, that is not a mexican accent, that's just a North American doing the bare minimum. I think it's offensive when Latin American or Spanish characters are played by Americans who just don't respect us enough to do the effort. Maybe it's not her fault, maybe she was directed that way, the same way I am not angry at Giancarlo Esposito for making the worst accent in Breaking Bad, but when the show went like "he's from Chile, actually" I was like... fuck off gringos, he doesn't sound even barely chilean, like, not even a little bit, don't take a dump on my family's country for fuck's sake. They always do this! And now it's the French! Stop it! My first film will be a project made out of spite, it will be a Western with Spanish actors playing every American cliche mispronouncing the language until it's impossible to understand. It feels so weird, really. I decided not to watch this movie when I saw how Selena sounded, even before I knew what it was about. It's disrespectful. Hire trans people to play trans characters, HIRE ACTUAL MEXICANS TO PLAY MEXICAN CHARACTERS. HIRE CHILEANS TO PLAY CHILEAN CHARACTERS. HIRE SPANIARDS TO PLAY SPANISH CHARACTERS. AAAAAAAAA. *pulls his hair out and jumps off a cliff*

Quetzal

I don't mention Crash specifically - I more compare it to the more recent Green Book or The Danish Girl, but Crash is definitely another example of the same issue.

Jessie Earl

I was never planning on watching this film, one because I'm not the biggest musical fan and two because the trailer seemed lackluster. A Mexican American youtuber I follow mentioned this film was causing division between Mexicans and Mexican Americans and that has me worried. I havent read Jessie's script yet but I'm wondering if she'll be covering people comparing this films award buzz to the buzz crash got in 2004.

Brandon Oglesby

Seems like an absolute dumpster fire… I'll wait for your video Jessie, but I can't imagine I'll even try to watch the movie…

Rick Sjolin (BearGriz72)

I haven't read the script part of your post because I'd rather wait for your video review, but I've been hearing that the movie's been getting criticism not just from trans people, but also Mexicans. It seems like this cis-gendered French guy didn't do his research at all and ended up offending everybody with any actual connection to the source material, meaning that the praise has been coming...from other cis-gendered white people. This guy is the real "DEI hire". Completely unqualified, but more "politically acceptable" in moviemaking circles. He shoulda just produced it, handled the business and promotion ends, and hired writers, directors, and stars who could bring their own authentic trans AND Mexican experiences with them.
