The Capitalist Realism of "For All Mankind"

Elon Musk's dream is made reality in a "Star Trek" prequel. Hey all, this is a surptise almost video essay that sprang out of a convoersation I recording with the amazing Dr Erin Macdonald that started off as a discussion on our frustration with For All Mankind, but became a really emotional talk about the stories we tell about our future that I wanted to share with everyone. Hope you all enjoy ❤️

Thank you so much for doing this. I'm very glad and grateful that you are taking aim at capitalism. In the video, you described the subtext of FAM season 2 as "Progress is seeing marginalized people in oppressor positions." I am going to hold this quote close to my heart. I think it (sadly) sums up the definition of "equity" espoused by the college where I teach. There's lots of work on making classes a more equitable learning experience, which is excellent! But there's also an explicit commitment in the "equity-centered" strategic plan to stimulate and strengthen the capitalist growth economy. The best this approach to equity could achieve is "seeing [more] marginalized people in oppressor positions." Thank you for speaking out against this lip-service to social justice.

I’m a woman engineer working in human spaceflight and Dr. Erin had me tearing up too. I see almost every aspect of your conversation on a regular basis at work. For those of us who got into this because of things like ST & science & exploration, seeing billionaires use these resources as their personal playgrounds - on the pretense that it’s because climate change will destroy Earth so they’re our only hope - is very depressing. I have many thoughts, but TLDR y’all said everything I’ve been feeling for a long time now. :(
