Unraveling the Spiderverse's Queerness

Hey all! I'm aiming to have my next video out to you all by next week early. It's been hectic and busy cause stuff is ramping up on Identiteaze (literally had a 3 hour meeting today to do like... a quarter of the shot list haha). But I also wanted to share out this livestream I did today with some amazing folks to discuss how trans and queer narratives appeared in the latest Spiderverse movie, and how that interacted with issues of identity, police, race and other themes throughout the film too! I'll have the edited version up on my secondary channel next week when I find time to edit it, but wanted you all to have access to the full thing early while I do so!

I hope you're all taking care of yourself. I adore you and love you. Hope you are having a good Pride Month during all the stuff happening right now <3

Unraveling the Spiderverse's Queerness

For sure! Despite being a corporate megapic, this movie really nailed it's themes and brought people together for the right reasons. FD always has something to add to the discussion I feel. You certainly do as well Jessie!

thanks for the collaboration to continue the discussion. I hope I'm learning a lot and to open my eyes more to perspectives (i.e. non white) outside my own and continue to learn more. ...I kinda think that one reason people get upset in general is because there's just not enough representation out there and everybody is craving it. and it shouldn't be that we hear white queer voices over Black voices...everyone wants to be seen. And I think Across the Spiderverse is truly touching a lot of different people because it has broad layered themes...

Hahaha, thats amazing. and yeah, I love Gwen so much, regardless of the trans aspect. She's just great.

FD is super sweet and one of the kindest folks I've met. We've talked a few times BTS but it was so nice to have him on the stream finally.

I was so surprised to see F.D. popping up in there. That warmed my heart. Did you see the stream he did about the spiderverse with Lil Bill? Either way I loved the stream, you rock!

CookingWithSilence

I can see your point of view and understand how it can be very helpful for alot of people. Hopefully marvel will do better in the future.

I watched the movie yesterday, my brain actually went "when did Bellamy get an English accent" and Gwen constantly made me think of you

Ah I hope you enjoy it. <3

But to be clear, I hear you. It sucks that Marvel has not allowed to a queer spiderman. But I think that's something the filmmakers are trying to comment on and engage with, the fact that they CANT say that in the movie, at least that's my read <3

SO I will say; as FD said in the stream, this is not saying all Black people are queer, but that queer themes resonate in terms of how we discuss queerness as people who systems treat as other, as people who the system has not been made for and can be placed as outsiders that the system can either accommodate or push out as enemy. So it's not saying all BIPOC people are queer in terms of sexuality or gender, but queer in terms of a queer understanding of how systems work. As for Gwen as trans, again, same thing. It's pointing out how the writers of this movie (who quite clearly are ok with recontextualizing existing spider people and not tying them directly to their comic book history) are using trans coding and themes in order to inform Gwen's themes and character arc. This is not saying Gwen is or is not literally queer, but more talking about how the themes of queerness are pervasive throughout the film.

Been reading spider man comics for years, seen the movie 🎬 four times now and I think that this is a bit of a reach. Gwen Stacy isn't transgender, not in the comic books or movies. She's a cis girl. To say otherwise is to overlook her entire history. Spider man oddly enough of all super heroes is the most straight hero in comics. He's always has a girl friend. His life may be a hot mess , he may be short on cash but for some reason he always dating someone, and it's always a girl. So far there's never been a queer Spider man. That's marvel for you. At least DC got them beat on queer super heroes. They even do queer comics for pride 😤 month and you don't have to read anything into their stories. It's our there in the open. Also, FYI the majority of black people do not like having ther life style refined to as being queer. For some reason they see the queer community as mostly a rich white thing. The black community has never been a one side fits all group of people. It's n complicated history.

Been waiting for something like this since release day :]
