I do think there’s some truth to “everyone loves a tomboy”…but only to a point. It’s something that a person is supposed to grow out of when they hit the ceiling of “you’re one of the boys……except only in propagating patriarchal norms, not in reaping the benefits, and at a certain point your job is to focus on making yourself desirable to men, not competition to men.” Support for “tom boy” behavior turns on a person in jobs, health, and relationships as an adult. “Assertive” becomes viewed as “bossy/shrewish,” “strong” becomes “too muscular and therefore unattractive,” etc. The real sad part is that by engaging with “not like other girls” mentalities, the person becomes extremely isolated without support structures when the system decides it needs to remind that tom boy where her place is, and that no matter how “manly” she acts, that will not protect her. (Or rather, I should say “me” because that was my personal experience.)
