Star Trek Picard Season 3 Review - Patron Version

So this video became a MUCH bigger thing than I intended, but I wanted to talk a lot about the issues I saw this season... but I also wanted to have fun and express what I liked. I hope you all enjoy this video cause it was a fun one to make (and I did a few unexpected things in there, haha). This video will go live for everyone beyond Patreon on Friday <3. Sorry that this is on Google Drive, but YouTube is giving me pain with copyright claims, so I'll share the non-claimed version on YouTubeASAP.

Also, as an aside, I know I've done a few Star Trek things lately, mostly cause I've needed to for my mental health and cause it helps me relax after so many hard videos, but also because I have two big videos that I'm working on coming. You should all have the first of them next week, sometimes a week early <3. And also... IDENTITEAZE is coming along well. I'll share more updates next week, but... yall... I'm so excited <3. Anyways, enjoy this video review!

My stray observations: • Worf used to r*pe people to death with his sword – nice! • Cyberpunk is the best way of portraying capitalist dystopias, always has and always will be • When falling into a deadly gravity well, low on power, the Titan continued to waste a lot of energy on exterior lighting • There is nothing to lose when giving an inspiring speech about overcoming an imminent deadly threat – if you are wrong everybody is dead anyway and nobody is left to point the finger • In the future, 9/11 will continue to be the only reference Americans have to any sort of violent tragedy • Picard will be ostracised for making stupid decisions that seem to get everyone killed then given another chance 20 minutes later • Marvel comedy is now the default setting, get used to it • When testing if somebody is a Changeling, as them a trivial question open to interpretation, rather than a concrete verifiable fact from the past, and shoot them anyway to be on the safe side • Strange that a spaceship carries no spacesuits for the crew for times when life support is shut off or when they need to abandon ship • In the future, throwing stuff at enemy spaceships is far superior to any type of advance offensive technology • Let’s not study those new type of lifeforms – space jellyfish – we have places to be • The word terrorist is meaningless without context, might as well just say baddie • Klingons are now like Jedis I guess and changelings are like Cylons (Battlestar Enterprise) • A headbutt from a Klingon is so weak it causes no bruising, bleeding, or concussion and only places an opponent temporally off balance • In the future, smoking will still be a signifier of a baddie, sorry I mean terrorist • Is being a pacifist who chops off heads like that friend we all have who says they are vegetarian but eat chicken? • Wow, Star Fleet’s level of xenophobia is brutal “Set phasers to disintegrate anybody not like us”. • I lost count of the number of coincidences and I thought Star Wars was bad for nostalgia porn but this is xxx rated • “Use your gut, Data” on the Borg Cube trench run • It is not against Star Fleet regulations to operate a spaceship while drunk

This is an epic review! Very cool.

A quick comment: at some point we'll have to reckon with the complex and weird way that racism plays out with the Ferenge. The way you work here - not needing to create an attitude of hate but curiosity and investigation in the way you look at Pickard -- is helpful. I'm a Jewish woman, fully aware that I still have a very priveledged role in this country because of my skin color and cis identity. I'm also pretty sure that the writers may be Jewish. But still, the short, money-obsessed, big-nosed Ferenge with their "Rules of Aquisition" too too much reflect the way Jews were depicted in Nazi Germany -- with the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion." What this tells me is that 1. antisemitism is still alive and well, even though in complex ways that afford me privileges 2. One can be Jewish or a member of a group and still unconsciously hearken to the cultural stereotypes of those groups. (I've been silently wincing at and going "well I've got to let this go" at the Ferenge for years. But they so so so much echo antisemetic portrayals by Nazis -- I'm getting sad and sick of it.) For certain groups, prejudices can be like archetypes or stories that can exist seemingly benign, until suddenly, they are not. In the meanwhile those of us in that group can pretend we are safe members of the dominant group and ally ourselves with the oppression of others. I bring this up because I trust and respect you. YOU are the best, wonderful one. I learn from you how to see -- a good thing for an oldster like me.

Dowloaded and listened to the whole commentary: Beautifully done. I especially appreciate the critique of the way right-wing fandom have attacked Discovery. Discovery is my favorite trek, and I've questioned the so called "welcoming" "ideal" Star Trek fandom (and Trek itself) when I've seent the hateful, racist, sexist -- and just plain mean-spirited -- reaction to the series. I don't subscribe to Paramount anymore, and haven't watched Pickard, cause -- why? And the white-white-white topography of Brave New Worlds advertising (and bridge-crew) with black tokens on the side doesn't help. Just sad.

I loved your review of this season and it put some of the shortcomings of certain themes in perspective. I really appreciated everything you said🤗🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️🖖❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🖖🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈🤗

I didn’t think I was going to have time to watch this but I remembered to download it before flying from London to Washington and I’m glad I did. Absolutely great - summed up all my misgivings and articulated some things I was concerned about but couldn’t quite express. I’m glad I’m not the only one with such mixed feelings about that season

The Nebula captions rendered "Kirk's Enterprise" as "cocks enterprise". Perfect! 🤣

Jessie, don´t you dare make your Star Trek videos any shorter ;)

Emily Ringborg

Yes, it working now!

Emily Ringborg

hmm, it just worked for me, are you still having the issue?

Michelle C Funk

I can´t watch the video :( It says that the number of allowed playbacks has been exceeded.

I think that Adam & Eve sponsor spot was the most fun I've ever seen

As much as I genuinely enjoyed this season, and love seeing all the glowing reviews from others, I'm very happy to see a deeper, more thoroughly nuanced analysis which fully acknowledges the numerous inherent flaws of the narrative. And while it's reasonably clear Matalas is an enlightened individual who is very much well-intentioned in presenting the cultural allegories therein, the mixed metaphors can absolutely cause problematic readings of the material, depending on the individual viewer's perspective. Obviously it's difficult to control how someone interprets art, after all there are probably people out there who view the film Starship Troopers as genuinely inspiring, pro-military space adventure, as opposed to being satire of fascistic Far Right ideology. However, whenever art, inadvertently or not gives wiggle room for justifying prejudice towards marginalized groups, especially during troubling times like these, then yeah, it becomes a legitimate problem. I'm glad you brought up the Borg as the military parallel, since I'm one of the ones who actually proposed that interpretation a couple weeks back. I've done a lot of contemplation on the subject this morning, and while I think there's potential arguments to be made in favor of that thesis, and even began drafting my own, I found myself falling victim towards mixing metaphors between queerness and traditional family ideals related to military service, not quite reaching a coherent conclusion. Suffice to say, I retract my previous interpretation. I think ultimately, while this season is thoroughly pleasing in terms of strong characterization and exciting action/adventure set pieces, its themes are a bit muddied and could've been presented much, much more strongly. The way you describe Matalas though, I feel like he's the kind of guy who's open towards constructive criticism and could very well address and correct at least some of these issues in the future, especially if Legacy gets picked up. But yeah, as always, fantastic work, Jessie!
