Jumpgate #57 - Sic Transit Vir

Vir gets an arranged marriage, falls in love... and also may be doing some mass murder? It's a complicated episode of Babylon 5 as we continue with the Jumpgate podcast!

Whenever I've watched this, I always had the impression that Lindesty was being played as DEEPLY traumatized. Maybe it's because I actually kinda knew someone that acted this way. Their family was super conservative...they literally carried around some kind of Glen Beck 'bible'. And I always had the sense that something was not OK in that household, and that it went hand-in-hand with their extremist views. So, I actually liked Lindesty, because she represented something I had seen in real life. I also liked Londo and the bug, and I did like that Vir was trying to help. The rest of the episode was a mess. Watching this show on my 4th or 5th time through, I realized that JMS had a sort of formula for juggling the Shadow and Earth plot lines. He basically goes hardcore into one plot line, get it to a significant resolution, then have a few filler episodes before moving onto the other. Those filler episodes are kinda isolated and often a huge mixed bag, and those tend to be where we get some of these really idiotic ComEDy sub-plots. Basically: these were clearly inconsequential episodes by design, and thus neglected by design.

My favorite episode is earlier on actually in the first season when veer is trying to help his cousin get out of an arranged marriage and marry the person they love and Londo had a relative take them in as an honor and give them a fosterage and when they are a certain age they could pick who they wanted to marry he has a line that breaks my heart in that episode "I am old and my shoes are too tight it does not matter for I forgotten how to dance" When they ask why he did it he says "because you are yet children in this world and children should dance" I love metaphors they are so beautiful my least favorite season are one and 52 through four are out of this world good but my favorite episodes in the first season I love how did your car changes throughout the series and Londo in the very first episode he talks about how he is going to die Landon says Wetz and Tary know how they are going to die and in some cases when they have a vision he sees himself as an old man long into the future and he knows he's going to die with his hands around the neck of a Narn and when he saw your car he knew that was the person that it was him and showing how far he came the movie in the beginning their last words to each other each other or old friend they do develop a friendship I love in the one season I think it was the third or fourth wind gicar speaks at the end of Each episode Babylon 5 breaks my heart so many times it makes me have so many emotions there is so much character development into each and every character it feels like a roller coaster just the best ever the best thing I've ever seen

This has always been one of my favourite episodes and probably the one i've rewatched the most times. You two have valid opinions but I love the comedy especially. I have quoted Londo talking about the insects many times.

Jessie, if you’re saying dreaming about your teeth falling out is “normal,” for the love of god, get to the dentist, woman! For your sake and all of us that appreciate your smile, that’s your body sending you signals 😊

Quotes from JMS about the dropped stuff with Vir and the Narn: “I could've *sworn* there was a line there about the Narn recovering; I'm going to have to check this. I hope I didn't accidentally cut it for time while doing something else. (It was a LONG editing session.)” … ”It was in the observation dome scene with Ivanova; I realized that we'd cut a small piece for time that was expendable, but in the back and forth went one line too far without realizing it. Sigh....” … ”The only line was that "the Narn is recovering in Medlab," something to that effect. Sigh....” I think that - since JMS was writing the whole seasons at this point, this was basically just an episode that didn’t get a lot of attention given to it, and an attempt at a comedic episode intended to give some levity in between more heavy episodes. And also I think it was about the time that Steven First’s other show didn’t get picked up, so they were using it as an excuse to get Vir back on B5. I didn’t have quite as negative reaction to it at the time (more of a “eh, whatever” kind of reaction), but Vera is far from the only person who’s gotten upset at the way it’s done and what it actually says about the characters.

This is one of those episodes that I think had the core of an interesting idea (Vir found a way to help the Narn), but then had an entire mountain of crap dumped on top of it. This one hurts to watch.

So I never liked this episode & have not rewatched since I first watched it, but boy-howdy have you & Vera convinced me that this is one of the first episodes of the series.
